I really like these coins. I have a few of each design and want to add more to my collection. I notice that the Indian heads are more expensive but I haven't researched why that is. I'm thinking maybe there's just more demand for them because most collectors like them better. I would appreciate any comments regarding:

Which ones you like better?
Why the Indians cost more?
Names of reputable dealers?

Thanks,
TS

I like them both! I used to have one of each, back in 2002. I gave the 1932 Indian to my Dad for a birthday present and he really liked it - minted the year he was born. Also I gave a 1902 Liberty head to my grandmother - minted the year she was born. (She just passed away in February at 104) Both designs are very attractive.

It has been a while since I have bought American gold coins. However, if you are looking for PCGS and NGC certified, I have been very pleased with double eagles I have purchased from duvall gold. http://duvallgold.com.

I have one of each- my parents gave them to me for my birthday last year. Personally, I prefer the Indian Head mostly for the design, but the Liberty Heads are nice too. I'd suggest getting one in AU, since you get all the detail without the big MS price tags. AU58 Indians can sometimes be called MS62's, so they're a great buy.

My preference of design is the Indian Head, but I'd be thrilled to get either one

The five dollar indian head is indeed more expensive. I believe it is because there just simply are fewer available. By todays standard, it is a popular design. At the time of issue, that wasn't the case as there was a tuberculosis scare. The incluse design was not well accepted by the public as the incluse design retained dirt and by extension dreaded germs. Many were afraid to even touch them.

1. The cheapest
2. Probably mintage numbers(although I haven't compared the two) and demand. I agree, it seems more people like this design.
3. Harlan Berk has quite a few examples of each, from EF to MS. I think he has a lay-away program too. Doah!!!

I personally like the Indian reverse and the Liberty obverse. Call me crazy....
