will appreciate if you could let me know:

1. is there any custom duty or tax when you buy Canadian silver coins from RCM? State by state? How about Washington state?

2. shipping is free for MC member in US?

Thanks in advance!

I live in the US and have purchased from RCM many times. I have never been charged any duties. I have earned MC status and do receive free shipping.

I am visiting family in Ottawa in May, and I wonder whether I will be charged any duties by US Customs when I reenter the country with coins I have bought on my trip to Canada? Anyone know how these duties work?

Duty (tax) is payed on items you purchase outside of the country that the Canadian government hasn't been able to taxes. In Ontario sales tax is 13%, so when an item enters Ontario from outside of the country the government collects its taxes.
There are exceptions to this. Due to the North American free tread act (I think that's what it's called) goods that are 100% manufactured in the USA aren't charged duty when crossing the boarder in to Canada. But if any part of the item you are purchasing was made outside of North America then duty is charged. Example, you buy a nice new coin from the US mint. You figure that since the coin is minted in the US, no duty will be charged. Now if the clam shell that the coin comes in was 'made in china' they the government can and most likely will impose full duty charges on the full purchase price of the coin.

This is now it was explained to me by a Canadian customs agent about six years ago. Things could have changed since then. Not sure if it is different with Americans buying items in Canada an importing them into the US.

Pure silver and gold coins are always duty free. Hopefully the customs agent doesn't know which are pure and which are sterling..... :-)

I am a MC member in Tennessee. Shipping is free. I have never been charged tax or duty on any purchases.

I doubt that there is any duty on either Canadian or U.S. coins being brought across the border. If a coin is subject to tax and it is brought back into Canada and tax hasn't previously been paid, then it would be due upon import, unless they were part of the individual exemption. I doubt it would be an issue unless there were large enough quantities involved. A Canadian coin coming from the U.S. wouldn't typically trigger suspicion since they are clearly Canadian items to begin with.

I was a Customs agent for three years as a summer job when I was a university student back in the late eighties and I wouldn't have looked twice at Canadian coins someone was bringing in. That was before HST/GST so I am sure there have been many changes since then.

Even you get charged tax for pure silver coins, you can submit the receipt and description of the coins and their metals content to the border agency and they will refund you.
