Hello members, I have this coin but are not sure where it was minted. The World coin catalog states with "CHI" mint mark, it was minted in Valcambi, Chiasso, Italy. If with "ml" mint mark, it was minted in Candaian Royal Mint.

But my coin bears no mint mark, where was it been minted? Can anyone tell me if sure? Thank you.

Apparently Krause does not know either. There are three entries one with no mint mark.

When I first saw the coin I wondered about the odd color and the extra wide rims. I have never seen a copper-nickel strike (counterfeit) and could find none listed. But in person I would examine the margin along the rim VERY closely. I still suspect something could be wrong.

According to the Schön, there are three varieties as far as the mintmarks are concerned.
2.1 - Royal Canadian Mint, MM: Maple Leaf
2.2 - Valcambi*, MM: none
2.3 - Valcambi*, MM: CHI

* By the way, Chiasso is in Switzerland, next to the Italian border. Valcambi's HQ is in neighboring (but equally Swiss) Balerna today.

Thank you your information Christian, but not I am not quite understanding, is Valcambi in Italy or Swiss? I even can't search Valcambi through Wikipedia, where is it? Do you think it is so odd that the British Dominica and Cayman Islands minted their silver coins in Valcambi but not in US (for vicinity) or GB Royal Mint?

Valcambi is located in Switzerland, as I wrote. Chiasso and Balerna are both on the "Swiss side" of the border so to say. The company has a German Wikipedia entry, see http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valcambi but apparently none in English. Anyway, here is their website: http://www.valcambi.com/products-an...oins-medals/

As for how odd it is to have such coins made "far away from home", well, I suppose that most of these were made for collectors in various countries. (Just as collector coins "from" Niue, for example, have been made in Poland or South Africa ...) Today Dominica does not issue its own coins but participates in the East Caribbean currency area - and those E.C. coins are mostly made in the UK and Canada. Also, most of the Cayman Islands coins have been made by The Royal Mint in the UK.
