As so many have already said, leave it alone. As it is, it's OK. If you mess it up, it can not come back.

If you use Acetone should it be the industrial/commercial stuff you get at the hardware store or will my wife's fingernail polish remover work?

Industrial stuff, the fingernail polish remover has impurities in it.

If the coin is all original and hasn't been cleaned before Id leave it alone. If it has a history of cleaning then maybe, but devaluing any all original coins even if you just rub it a little. IMO
