thanks for the comments folks. I have had this coin for about 35 years. the Classic head 08-14 are so tough to find in VF or higher grades and I was just worried about the next 35 years if it would continue to degrade. I think i'll leave it as is. I would die if anything happened to it, this one is like an old friend.

The coin looks nice and original. I would not do anything to it.

Funny you mention this topic. I have a couple of old coppers that "haze up" on me. I usually just make sure my fingers are really oily and I handle it some and it makes it look better for a few years.

Guess it sounds weird, but I've always done that and they always look better. I know a coin dealer that applies a special light oil to most all of his large cents that have been in a album for years and look a little dry and dusty. If anyone knows of a reason to not do this, please let me know. I don't want to harm the coins.

Oil from your fingers causes further corrosion. That is what gives coins their dull look. The oils and stuff from peoples hands breaking down the metal over time. That dealer is an old guy I will bet. A lot of older guys did that back in the day thinking it would preserve the coin. It does not.

As mentioned, a simple acetone bath or use some verdi care on it and there ya go.

If I were you I would only buy supplies and slabbed coins from that dealer in the future unless you are buying precious metal coins for spot.

I agree with Don.

I have done this process .. acetone and/or verdicare and have been happy with the results ..

If you try this process .. then maybe try it out on some lesser value coins .. like Indian Head cents ... to see if you like the look.

As so many have already said, leave it alone. As it is, it's OK. If you mess it up, it can not come back.

If you use Acetone should it be the industrial/commercial stuff you get at the hardware store or will my wife's fingernail polish remover work?

Industrial stuff, the fingernail polish remover has impurities in it.

If the coin is all original and hasn't been cleaned before Id leave it alone. If it has a history of cleaning then maybe, but devaluing any all original coins even if you just rub it a little. IMO
