quote:
It's how they are depicted that may have brought up the objection.
Perhaps they showed... Liberty as American flag on top of Sadams statue,... Freedom as Gitmo prison camp, and... Independence as Arafat & Sharon shaking hands.
I guess if you had this image on a coin, it would be offensive to the people of Japan. After all, how dare we raised our colors on their soil: Also...Shame on us for raising the American Flag on top of Sadam's statue because we were not sensitive to the Iraqi people. I heard from interviews that the two marines responsible for this "Human rights" violation were disciplined for this insensitive display from the United States. BTW, They quickly put up an Iraqi flag in its place. Look...the issue is what is the best image that symbolizes what America is all about. If everybody is so hung up on animals and plants on gold coins, why should we follow suit? I, for one, would rather lead. P.S. To give you an idea of my strong beliefs, I DON'T care how the terrorists being held in Cuba are treated. If listening to 24 hour rap songs or watching Oprah sensitivity training non-stop yeilds one bit of information that saves an American's life....Go for it!! After all, if it was your father being held by terrorist animals, wouldn't you do everything possible to acquire information...or should you be nice and state, "Pretty-please Mr. Terrorist...please!!"?

From zakgold "Look...the issue is what is the BEST image that symbolizes what America is all about." I think the CCAC issue is what "symbol" on a gold coin will SELL the BEST. Surely "Liberty, Freedom and Independence" would make excelent choices for Gold coins. But it seems the Bufflo "symbol" for a world market is what the CCAC think will sell the BEST. I'm just thankful the Bufflo was picked over an image of Elvis.[:p] (not that I have anything against the King of rock & roll)

Im sure that this is at least partly true !! economics plays a part,, But only in the minds and pockets of the treacherous at heart!! but when viewed by Patriotic America symbols of Liberty ,Freedom, and Justice will always be the chosen symbols. and that is what I as an American want to be portrayed to the world !! As a coin Collector if they make Buffalo Gold coins, I can choose not to support it with my money !! Rick

Oh great! Now we are going to hear from all the Elvis fans. They are the ones driving the price of the Tennessee Statehood Quarters as they need all they can get to put Elvis decals on and then sell them for $10 each! Zakgold I feel just the way you do only at times I think we should eliminate uncooperative problems, if you know what I mean? Lets face it, once a terrorist always a terrorist! Takes a pretty sick man to slit someones throat while their hands are tied doesn't it?

I understand how you feel. Given the choice and the power I'd probably "eliminate uncooperative problems" But on the other hand isn't that what gave Hitler all the bad press.

I don't believe Hitlers problems were perceived, not real! There is a huge difference! Don't get me wrong as I want nothing more than some peace in this world so we all can become coin collectors, coin traders and live happily ever after!!!

Well I screwed that one up! Sorry! I meant to say Hitlers problems WERE perceived (in his own mind) and all those people were no threat to anyone! They were not terrorists and didn't kill innocents! Now back to coin collecting to take our minds off of all the worlds problems! I love hiding there!

Sorry for my off topic remarks. Getting back on topic.... Does the CCAC have the final word or who does decide on all the images on USA coins? I thought the Governor of each state chose the State Quarters. Is that correct? Who chooses the other designs?

I like the idea of the buffalo on the coin as this is definately more american than the liberty symbol as even the American indians revered the buffalo or should that be bison and it fed the push west by the immigrants. the liberty is not American its a french made item that was sent to the USA. My view that liberty is being seen by the world as offensive is that its being propt up by guns and where even basic human rights are being ignored aka guatemale bay etc. but sadly the American people cannot do anything as their hands are tied by such things as the patriot act etc..Anyway I look forward to seeing how much will be charged for these gold coins and if they will be of value to collect

First, the animal scum held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba are the lowest of all life forms. The United States gives them 3 square meals per day along with all the copies of the Koran they want. Just because we make this "poor humman scum" subject to 24 hour rap music or other measures to gain intelligence is a far cry from westerners being beheaded, dragged naked through public streets and hung from bridge tops! Nobody gets upset when terrorist scum beheads westerners, but if we make them stand for hours...that evil United States is at it again! They are not subject to the Geneva convention and in the past, they would have been shot. Remember when spys were shot? (The same with looters...how come they are not shot anymore?. It would really deter their lowest life form activity) As for me, the Patriot Act is good legislation. You need to actually read it before you comment on it. Back to the coins...alright, let's forget Liberty because she is sooooooooooooooooooo bad and too politcal. Let's put a nasty eagle on the coin with this motto, "If you _____ with me, you are going down!" .9999 fine pure gold of course

The governors have the final say on the Statehood Quarters but I must assume thats is after everything that goes on behind closed doors or under the table! A few of the states have actually accepted the votes cast by their citizens but those are far and few. As for as our normal coinage design, well, in the beginning it is CONGRESS and like it or not, in the end it is still CONGRESS!!! Everything in between is nothing more than a horse and pony show by a bunch of folks who actually think they had some say in the matter?
