I'm not a collector of silver bullion coins, but these seem kind of cheap. Is that mintage of only 8000 correct? Why are they so cheap and available?

Does anyone know about these?

Privy marks are strange things, basically they are just regular Maple Leaf bullion coins worth no more than spot, with a little counterstamp.

The privy makes them unique, but most often not unique enough to command a premium. There are a few exceptions like the Titanic privy, that caught collectors fancy, and still command as premium.

They are almost like old " chop marks " on Trade dollars or 8 reales coins. Some peole find coins with chop marks collectible and some people consider it post mint damage.

Its a stamp, or the privy design is in the die. It appears to be raised. They also appear to have a different finish than the standard ML. I agree strange the 1997 ML sells for more. despite being 12x or so more common. This is why I question the validity of the 8000 mintage.

Yes it is in the die, I was just using the chop marks as an example of how some people collect privys and some think they are just bullion.

Just about all of the privy-marked Silver Maple Leaf coins have mintages of 25,000 or less, with most released since 2005 having mintages of 10,000 or less. All carry a premium over melt value, with some of the early/popular issues, commanding premiums of $100 or more over melt value.

Yes. The 2008 issue with the Rat privy had a mintage of 8,000.

While there is a group of avid collectors of these privy-marked SMLs, the group is not so large as to create a demand larger than the available supply.

Thanks.

I've been looking for something to buy thats new to me but fairly limited in terms of mintage. This is why I gave up collecting US coins 20 years ago. I did some poking around and see that an entire lunar cycle 1998-2009 can be had for under 1k. So you are saying all these are 25k or less? Why is there no official mintage? I've only seen figures from sellers. Does the RCM produce these? These seem cheap and I guess I'm tying to figure out why. But I suppose you are correct they don't have much of a following. I'm going to buy one on ebay and check it out. Any place else that sells these?

Pick up a copy of the following book: Charlton Standard Catalogue: Canadian Coins Vol 2 Collector & Maple Leaf Issues. You'll find all of the privy-marked SMLs listed with their mintages.

Why do so many remove them from the mint packaging? Woudn't it be better to keep them in?

I suppose not too many collect these? They appear difficult to find in original packaging. Are there known fakes? like with Pandas?
