I acquired a set of Eisenhower coins. A complete set of all 32 coins. The 1971 S 40% BU and the 1971 S Proof look the same to me. Same goes for the 1972's, 73's, 74's and 76's. The 71's, for example, one is marked "1971S Silver MS63" and the other is marked "1971S PF63." They did not come in an album but in coin holders. My Dansco #8176 Eisenhower album which has a place for all 32 coins as many of you probably know has holes for 1971 S 40% BU and 1971 S Proof, same for the other years too. Just wondering how the heck one tells them apart. Thanks!

I'd weigh them to see if they are clad or 40%. 1971-S and 1972-S coins were all 40% silver. It's odd that you can't tell the proofs from the BU pieces by their appearance. Proofs should have reflection fields that stand out.

Clad Ikes should weigh 22.7 grams while 40% silver weighs 24.6 grams. Weight can help with the later dates.

Since joining this site I found posts that mention a " tissue test" for Silver, and maybe one of the other members that know more about this than I do can reply.

If you can't tell them apart I would suspect that you don't have both a proof and a BU. The 40% silver BU will be a little "whiter" but will have a similar type surface in the fields as the P and D coins do. The proofs will have mirror fields like the other proofs. Look at the later S mint coins in the set, the 76 S Type II, 77 S, and 78 S to see what the fields of a proof should look like.

If you can not tell the proof from the BU, you do not have two different coins...

This is the 40% BU set

How-Do-I-Tell-Difference-Between-Eisenhower-40%buvs40%-Proof

Here is the 40% Proof set

How-Do-I-Tell-Difference-Between-Eisenhower-40%buvs40%-Proof

As you can see, the proof is drastically different from the BU coin. Proof coins have the mirror finish and BU do not.

The same will apply for all the years you mention. Post some pics of the coins please.
