So many of the 1910s and 1920s I've come across are badly worn. So much that in most cases you can hardly read the dates. My first thought was that this was only because they were older than those of the 1940s,50's and beyond.

Then I looked at the Indian Head cents which I've gathered in my travels and none of them look as worn as the typical 1910-1930 Lincoln Cent.

Does this have anything to do with how the early Lincoln cents were made or is my experience limited to myself?

Common experience. I'd bet people starting pulling all IHC from circulation long before any common Lincolns. Design details also influence wear characteristics. Some designs simply wear better than others. Early Lincolns and later IHC are of the exact same composition and weight.

Not really an answer to your question. Just comments. Others may have more specific reasons for this.

Its probably pretty safe to assume once the design was changed that the IHC started getting pulled from circulation by people but I agree the IHC design seems to hold up to wear better. At least on the obverse the lincolns have larger open areas which generally dont hold up too well imo.

Plus the lincolns circulated through two world wars, and more importantly the great depression. When every penny counts during hard times collections go out the window and start getting spent

Im sure theres other reasons and factors like coin make up ect but thats my theory
