I've decided to start collecting Civil War era coins. I'm not looking for perfect coins just examples from the Civil War years. I'm thinking of maybe starting with IHC's from each year and going from there.

Do you think this is a good starting point or should I look at others first?

I value your opinions...Thanks!

I started with the IHC. They were the easiest. Later added CW commemoratives.

If you really want a representative of the Civil War years, look for some Civil War tokens(patriotic and store card types). They tend to be much less common than coins of the era but are still generally affordable and you can find many for under $20.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I do like those tokens! I think I'll concentrate on both the tokens and IHC's. Both groups are equally appealing.

Well I did it. I had the day off so I took a ride to the coin dealer near me and purchased my first CW era coin. A 1863 IHC. I probably paid to much ($9.00) but I liked it and wanted to get started.

I asked about tokens. Any tokens that come in they put on the bid board. There were none today but there were several notes that I had to run away from.

Here is my coin. Please excuse the poor photos. I'm still working on rebuilding my photography setup for coins. These were taken with the point and shoot...

Aim for some seated liberty silver coins. Some are very scarce, others fairly common. I like quarters because they're still a coin we use. 1861 and 1862 p mints are pretty easy to get.

Nice Hit some coin shows, I always see civil war area coins and tokens. That way you can shop around for better prices.
