I recently dug a 1943 P nickel but am having trouble finding the exact one online..it has either an S or a J (I need to find my magnifying glass) to the left of the Monticello building. Any info about this would be great as I am by no means schooled in the art of coin collecting or values.

Coins never had the mint mark J. Only P, D and S for cents. The coin might be worth 50 cents to a dollar. Please post a photo.

welcome!

If there is an S to the left the building, it is something someone did to the coin once in circulation.

Why would they have done that? And why would it be disregarded?

The only person who will know why they did it to the coin is the person who did it. Could of just been someone bored. Post a pic if you are able to but it sounds like PMD.
