King Armah of Axum? Just had a look at some Axum coins, pretty cool and they all look like this. So yeah, Armah.

Ok BB nice job! King Armah the grand negas and one of the last to strike coins 600-640 ad. He is known as Ashama ibn Abjar in the Islamic tradition. This is the only coin I have see of him that his face is not destroyed. This Christian king also hid the early Muslims from persecution. Take it away BB.

Just for larks I had picked out one of the Kings off the 'list' of Aksum. After the post I cheated (sort of) by looking at his coins. I almost chocked on my coffee .... I had intended it to be a joke and I was almost right ?

I know FR I was thinking to myself. What are the chances?! I said, to my wife, when this guy (FR) finds out it is one of a relativly few coins of the same obscure empire he's gonna be thrown back. Seriously I thought a bit of obscurity would hold off even the most seasoned numismatist, and FR blew the door open by chance. Even if I showed the legend it would have baffled many, who's familiar with corrupt medieval African script called Ge'ez? Impressive guys.

I have to say, I thought it was sassanian. I had no idea there were Axum coins before FR came out with it! There was an obelisk in rome from ancient Axum, but they gave it back a few years ago.

I know precious little of the Kingdom of Aksum (or Axxum). My interest stemmed from a front page New York Times article about ten years ago that announced 'Ark of the Covenant located'. Essentially it was based on the work of a British journalist who carries little weight in academia. But his book did have some points to make. The history of Ethiopia is quite ancient and the 'Jews' of Ethiopia had one particularly interesting omission in their practice of religion. They had never heard of Hannakah. They had been separated from the mainstream for over 2,200 years minimum ! Curiouser and curiouser
