Hi, I found this old coin in the back of a drawer of an old desk of my dad's (see pics)

Need-Help-Identifying-Old-European-Coin---1700's?. Curious to know what it might be. Looks like it could be British, Spanish, Portuguese or something like that. Date looks like it might begin with "17".

Anybody recognize this coin? Sorry for the bad condition, but I assume someone may recognize the features and be able to place it.

Thanks much.

I'll have a stab.
One of the Spanish Netherlands, perhaps Namur; if so, perhaps a Liard of 1713.

Thanks to your lead on the Liard, I actually think its a 1713 Luxembourg Maximilien Emmanuel de Bavière (1711-1714)Liard. See the link here, if interested: http://www.saivenumismatique.com/pe...&archive=oui

I think Baker312 is right.

KM doesn't list a 1713 Liard for Luxembourg and the 1712 is pretty costly at $150 in VG, so your coin even in this condition might be worth a few bucks.

You could contact museums In Luxembourg, Brussels, and the British Museum to see if they have a 1713 specimen.

Thanks for this interesting specimen.

You're welcome, and thank you again for the help. I found this closed item on ebay where a 1712 specimen sold for about US$60: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Spanish-Net...em3a7f001bad

I sent an email to the Luxembourg City History Museum to see if they would like it as a donation to their collection. I'll see what they say.

That seller has some interesting coins but unfortunately there's no way to ask him questions.

That seems a bad sign, if he doesn't deliver, there's no alternative but to complain to ebay or PayPal; so I'm not going to bother bidding.

Do you think that's reasonable ?

Pertinax, if you are referring to the ebay seller "uncirculated_1", he seems to have a very good seller rating, and the way to contact him (assuming you are already registered on ebay) is to click on his seller name in the listing. This will take you to a page showing his details and full rating specs. Under the US Dollar coin he uses as his image you will see a few links, including "Contact this member". If you click on that it will take you through a process whereby you can send a message to him or her. Let me know if you run into any difficulty. Cheers
