This is about the most obvious Victorian counterfeit 25¢ I have seen on ebay.
What do you see on this coin to identify it as a fake?

Seller feedback making purchases from ebay seller, coins.hk, is a good clue...

Not to mention all the other markers... (which I'll step aside and let the others study the coin)

the foreign metal showing on the rim of the obverse is definitely weird. Love the amazing use of the 80 characters ebay gives you for a title.

Also the 2 and 5 in the 25 Cents:

The bottom line of the 2 seems too short, and the blob on the bottom tail of the 5 curls in too much and is much too close to the part above it.

I don't see anything.

Clueless, and even looking in the book , I see maybe a fat 0 in the 1870

If this is counterfeit, I would be sucked in.

Good eye Ukee, that's one of the signs that it's a fake.No genuine 1870 has a 0 like that.
The odd appearance of the metal should make you suspicious, but it doesn't confirm a counterfeit.

It is an obverse 2, and has a large 0 in the date. That makes it one of the rarest obverse types of the Vicky series. I believe one similar to it sold a few years ago for a few thousand dollars in a auction. Was that one real? I don't know!

Yes Zonad, that's the most obvious sign that it's fake.
I won't believe the 1870 OBV2 exists in a circulation strike until I see one.
I don't believe in 1871H OBV1 either, all that I have seen so far have been misattributed.
Just because a coin has been certified by ICCS and is listed in Charlton's and Trends doesn't mean it actually exists.Recall the 1872H OBV1

It is an obverse 2

Zonad... I've never known you to make an erroneous observation, but I guess there's always a first time... :)

This coin is clearly an obverse 1... most obvious marker is the right ribbon end detail which shows "V" is off centre, to the right.

DBM - I've seen a couple 1871H OBV1 in hand that were not misattributed...

I am never wrong in my obverse identification.
The ribbon end as a marker is dead.
It is not reliable, and this is how 1871H coins ended up misattributed in ICCS holders.

I think that it looks brassy as well.
I can't figure out why a faker should NOT make these in good silver.
Even if pure, the silver cost would only be about six bucks to the faker.

The fields around the lettering look a bit rough in parts.
Looks like a pit near the 'A' in 'VICTORIA', but from the picture, that could just be a black spot.

Some of the detail may be a bit vague, but it ain't too bad for a fake.

I
Can't see the edge milling,
can't do a comparative ring tone test,
can't weigh it.

I am in no way familiar with this series,
you fellas are way ahead of me, when it comes to die varieties, and fakes which may vary therefrom,
so I only have the pictures and a 'gut' feeling to go on.

Ignore all the Charlton mumbo-jumbo when trying to identify obverses of silver Victoria coins.
Charlton's is limited by intelectual propery and copyright issues.
For 25cent OBV1 you need only these two markers.
