Does anybody know how I can put in my "1-cents" for the San Fran mint to make a commemorative 2009 S VDB wheatie for general circulation to celebrate 100 years of the Lincoln Penny. Hopefully they will change it after that. I think that would be a cool idea.

I think plans are well underway to do something special in 2009. I've heard there will be different reverses, etc.

The bill that passed through congress says in 2009 there will be four different reverses portraying different times in lincoln's life, and the obversee will stay the same. I have heard that they will introduce 2009 VDB's P,D,S with original alloy material.
After 2009, the reverse is not known.

It seems to me if the new coin is changed in any way it would not be a Brenner design, so why put his initials on it?

after 2009 I hope there won't be any more cents.

The US government won't get rid of the dollar bill, so I doubt they will eliminate the cent.

Lou. I must agree with you, any change would not be a true Brenner design and that would be unfair to him and to collectors very well said my friend.

I disagree Spider. I think the government will get rid of both. Dollar bills will fade away and disappear, my guess is by 2013. The mint will probably stop striking cents for general circulation by 2011. Keep in mind though, the penny will be around forever, there's billions of them out there (or trillions?).

Just to clarify... 2008 cent will be the 100th year of this coins production.
2009 will be the 101st.

toast is correct.
The reason for the change in 2009 is to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth, the same as has been done for the 100th and 150th.

You'ld think for such a occation the Mint would come up with something really special like Lincoln's face on the front facing you and the back of his head on the reverse. How about Lincoln's left profile on one side of the coin, facing straight on on another side and a right profile on the other side of the coin. How about the 2009 just having Lincoln's house front view on the front of the coin and the rear of the house on the reverse. Or to honor Licoln put the licoln Town car on the reverse.

I doubt if they get rid of the cent...can you image trying to round everything to the nearest 5 cent? Think of Sales tax...the only way that would work would be do something like when I lived in Germany and the price you saw was what you paid with the tax already built into it. Or if you make $40000 a year = $19.23/hour your company would have to pay you an extra $40 a year if they round up to $19.25! I don't know about you all but my company wouldn't want to pay everyone an additional $40 a year...which would result in an additional $40000 in salaries if everyone in my company got rounded up! LOL

Sorry but you are almost two years late in putting in your opinion for a 2009 SVDB cent. It was signed into law in December of 2005.
Ronaldb112 almost has it right. The one majore error is his comment about the composition. The law allows (but does not mandate) the original composition of 95% copper 5% tin and zinc for the numismatics stikes for collectors. The regular circulation coins will be made out of whatever we are making cents out of at the time.
This means the possibility of 8 different cents for each of the four reverse designs or a total of 32 different varieties for the 2009 cents.
