Another newp. Again the photos (scans) are horrible so hoping the coin is nicer than what is shown here. I'll post better photos when it arrives. Delmatius (335-337 AD).AE 3.Cyzicus Mint.Laureate head right/Two soldiers standing, holding one standard between, GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS. RIC VII 132 r2.

I have bid on dozens of Delmatius over the years and never obtained one. Nice catch.

Jumped on this one because he seems to be an odd ball ruler and I haven't seen many of his coins for sale. The price was right also which helps with decision making.

Just so you know, the RIC attribution is according to mint city. It's how it's organized for late Roman coins. You could look up that number and not find the right coin unless you know the city.

Thanks Gil-galad. I'm still fumbling through the RIC numbers and double checking what dealers have these coins attributed as. Seems these pros make many mistakes.

They certainly do. I always check attributions.

This one arrived also. Their scan did not show how rough the surface was on this one. Still not a bad coin and one that will fill the hole for this Emperor.

Much better pictures!
Ive been looking at eastern mint coins all afternoon (im trying to get a more accurate date for my first coin by studying the evolution of the design through time) and this coin certainly fits in for Cyzicus - without the mint mark, Id be inclined to say Heraclea though. Its interesting how the designs varied as you traverse mints. Who knows, perhaps an official at Heraclea taught this particular die cutter?
Also - I like how the full legends are readable. DELMATIVS is in better condition than any of the rest of the legends!

Since these moneyers did everything by hand I can see how there would be a big difference between mints and even the die cutters at each mint. I wonder if each of them had a bust of the emperor to work from, looking at pictures of busts and the coins shows a very good likeness of the emperor on the coins. I'm also beginning to see how some mints did a much better job at their craft than some of the others.

Still a decent coin with solid legends, but rough field surfaces. I don't have the coin in hand but it could stand a drop in some distilled water for awhile and some very light scrubbing in the fields. That is up to you to decide if it needs it, of course. It's also possible it won't do it any good.
