Hi guys, new to the forum, I am a keen metal detectorist from England, recently I dug up this Roman coin from about 6 inches down, it`s not in the best condition and i`m having trouble identifying it.

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

Gez.

Appears to be a copper As of the Emperor Trajan (99-117AD) A good year long soak in Olive oil might improve it somewhat and remove some of the dark 'junk' off the surface. Do not scrubb except with a toothbrush unless you are sure you know what you are doing. Cleaned up a bit it is a nice coin. Worth maybe $25-30 after conservation.

Seeing a lot of detectorists around - pretty interesting to see what comes from UKs soils.

This looks to be Trajan. The reverse inscription Maridvnvm gave means it dates from the second year of his consulship (and some other things I intend to find out some day). I dont know what year that is though.

Trajan is best known for expanding the Roman Empire to its maximum size.

I would start with distilled water because once you apply that oil, some of the loose dirt may be more difficult to remove.

Soak in distilled water for a couple of weeks, changing water everyday. Be careful even scrubbing with a toothbrush. If need be, soak in olive oil next for a long time.
