I had an offer to buy one at $1425, which set off all kinds of alarm bells. It's in a blister card, and is the regular issue, not the test version. Has there been a history of counterfeits of these coins? The prjce seems fishy.

Current Spot is $1477. maybe the seller thinks gold will drop a lot more next week, and is trying to cut their losses, and get a quick sale?

From a reputable dealer? If it's in a blister, I might be a bit more careful.

That is true Masterofsecrets. My concern is that if I ask the seller to crack the blister, and decide not to buy it, he has a cheapened product. I cannot afford to take a risk on $1425 of gold, so I need to weigh the coin, and check the dimensions in order to allay fears.

You don't have to damage the blister to get at the coin. The packaging is essentially a coin in a capsule glued onto a card. The front side of the capsule (reverse face of the coin) can be opened carefully with a blade so you can at least weigh the coin and handle it with a gloved hand. I've seen it done before.

I personally wouldn't want to open the blister pack, but I can understand your concern given the recent amount of counterfeits (of other gold coins). Obviously the best would be to have another and compare them side by side.... Even if you just weigh the complete package it shouldn't be too much more than the coin by itself.

Not GMLs but there is a quote in this story that seems relevant. http://www.torontosun.com/2013/03/2...-in-his-home"Bond was selling the fools gold through a company he created called The Bullion Broker, investigators said. He was charging $1,500 an ounce â€" just below the market price of $1,600 an ounce. "If it's too good to be true, it probably is," Higgins said."

I passed, and aparrently it was fake. An associate of mine, who is one of the big.players in town said this guy had come in from out of town with 4-5 of these, all fake, and has been trying every buyer.

mmm.. these all came in plastic cards. Did he cut out the maple to verify? I am curious how it was determined to be a fake.
