Sorry! We are new to this. My daughters collection contains many poor quality quarters and dimes pre 1965 that were apparently saved for their silver content. Should we save them or sell them for their silver value and use the money to buy more collectible coins? This seems to be the logical thing to do to me. However I am kind of a sap and hate to see them melted down. Are they worth saving? The nickles are in surprisingly good shape but many of the quarters and dimes are very worn. Advice please?

I would sell them and buy silver maples if I were you! Poor condition coins lose most of their worth to collectors. Sell them and buy the best coins you can!

Although, with the recent steep drop in silver price you might want to wait for a rebound before selling. Your coins are only worth their silver content so will be more affected by silver price than better quality coins that have more numismatic value factored into their prices. Note, you'll be lucky to get 50% of value from a dealer or one of those 'buy your gold & silver' places. Might be worth checking them for varieties. You'll need a good loupe or microscope. Take a browse through http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php If you go down to the page for each individual year/denomination then you'll see the major varieties listed with prices and, if applicable, below that a list of minor varieties with pictures.

Thanks! We have been checking the coin price guide just to make sure we don't dump anything really collectible :) , had a few exciting moments learning about denticules . Of course we have the low when we need high and vice versa. Its fun. I can see why people like this. I have another question. Why are the American coins in so much better shape for their age? Better quality metal? Or maybe they were handled less? The Canadian dimes are kind of sad whereas the us dimes are beautiful and they are older.
Rest in Peace

with Kuh. Store them away safely and environmentally safe and hang on to them. IMHO

Buy a Canadian Coin book and try to post a few pics of what you think may be questionable and, we will take a look.
