I'd like to see if I can get some opinions on rarity and/or value of an error $20 bill. This is my first post on here, but I'm impressed by this forum and expect to continue posting and visiting this board in the future. Some background, I recently inherited my dad's coin collection when he passed away just over a year ago. I've been able to read and learn a lot about the coins, but there were a few bills, including this clear error, which I guess is called a fold-over error, with the mint mark on the back. I've seen a few similar on ebay, and some are priced in the $1000 range, although I'm not sure what they would actually sell for. Would someone mind giving my their thoughts on the value of an item like this? It is in fairly good shape, no major creases, although there are some minor fold marks around the edges. I'm trying to handle it carefully so as not to further damage it. thanks for any thoughts.

Not sure about $1000, but from Hertiage's auction archives I have seen a $200 to $300 price range.

ok, thanks for the reply. that's still a pretty good range. given it's not perfect condition and not that old, I would have been surprised if it was worth any more.

This is considered a moderate fold over error. Book indicates about $250.00 in EF grade. This confirms the HA archives values.
If it were in CU to GEM and If it was considered a major fold over error, then you can get into the $1000+ range.

thanks Jim. good to know, but shame to think handling of the bill could have cost $500 or so.

to CCF. Very nice note. You should put it in a mylar holder for protection. Did you check ebay sold prices? John1

thanks John. no, haven't gone back and checked the sold prices. I'm sure previous posters are correct that the slight imperfections would greatly decrease the value. I'm happy it seems to have some value, though.

Hi mth, Jim and Matt have the pricing estimates pegged for this foldover. My personal recommendation is to send it out to one of the grading companies like PMG or PCGS. It will protect the note over a long period of time and will ensure you a premium sell when you decide to unload it.

Welcome aboard. Errors are one of the most difficult items to buy and easiest to sell. Most owners think they are worth more than they are. However, less knowledgeable buyers often overpay. Just be on the lookout for fakes. Yours is of course authentic, and worth $250 all day long.
