Quote: Who should care - people, who try to do the money on every issue, because it "easy money" (it's not true, but they think so). They will stuck forever with the coins which nobody wants, and collectors - will continue buy the items that they interested in them. That's IMO. Not exactly. New coin collectors finance new purchases by selling off or trading old or unwanted coins. If this coin devalues to an absurd price point it will discourage further collecting. We're not buying cars here where some level of depreciation is expected. We are dealing in currency where some level of appreciation is expected. So as coin prices goes down, so does peoples interest in the hobby.

This is one of those coins that unfortunately looked better in the picture. I like the design and think it will be a nice series. I bought one and am hoping the following issues will be phenomenal. The price was a little bothersome but I don't need to rely on a flipping income for my hobby, And if it devalues and I loose interest in it I'll put it away.... I have lots of coins like that. Lots of series seems to have an ugly duckling coin in it. I'm hoping this was it.

--I personally like the coin and ordered one. Doesn't matter if it goes up in value or not. this is also my thought about coins that I like. Specifically to this one - will not order. Right nobody expects the coins we buy to go up in value, that's just a nice bonus, but how are you going to feel when the coin is selling for under $40 a few years from now.

Complex question. Would say, that less care of the resale value of my collection. But it will be unpleasant surprise, if someday each coin there will cost it's face value or silver content (for example).

What about the 25cent bird series though... I do like the images on them, but is 30$ not expensive for a coin with no silver at all? And everyone seems to love those coins.
I agree that the price is too high for this bee coin... but there are other coins and series that seem to do well even though they don't seem to have any value. Maybe just cause the bird coins are cheaper? So it seems like less of a financial hit to buy one?

pretty sure not many people buy these coins for their value going up. most go down. if it is a value game, we'd all be devoting our resources to stacking ASE's and SML's

@ Dooby: Quote: but how are you going to feel when the coin is selling for under $40 a few years from now. Nothing. It's not like I bought 500 of these guys or, like Coin_Chick says, rely on income from flipping coins. I doubt my wife's ring, my one nice watch, and most of our furniture are worth now more than what I paid for them. If the price drops so be it. The coin will sit in my displace case until I'm tired of it and my son can do with it what he will when I'm six feet under :) Quote: So if the mint releases 1,000 over priced coins we should all rush out and collect all of them for the sake of collecting and the love of numismatics. Odd logic you're using. I thought it's quite clear what I meant was I buy what I like at prices I feel I can afford when I want it. If the mint releases 1,000 what you deemed to be over priced coins, then I would, as with those that don't let "value" dictate everything in coin-collecting would, stick to picking and choosing to buy the ones that I feel is either aesthetically pleasing and in numbers and prices that I can afford. If it goes down in price it's only hurting the people that rely on selling to keep their hobby going, or those that "invested" as oppose to collected. Hobby will still be alive and well. @ elk: Care to elaborate on your one Garbage word? Or has this whole forum decided that coins that don't sellout or don't make a profit don't deserve any talk?

Hey, I am with you Pobo. I don't think the price is worth it because I am not the biggest fan of the design and coin size. But I have bought others just because I like the look. I am currently collecting the 2010 Vancouver Olympics mascot coins which is costing more an more to get them all, lol, but I could care less if anyone else thought they were worth anything.

I don't find this coin particularly appealing and the price does play into that to a degree. Mostly, it just doesn't speak to my personal taste. But the biggest reason that I didn't order this one is because it is the "1st in a series".
Frankly, I'm overwhelmed by series. Call it series fatigue. I've got the ducks, the 1 oz O Canada, the 1/2 oz O Canada, the birds of Canada, the glass bugs, the dragonflies, the untamed animals, specimen sets, silver dollars, uncirculated sets, baby sets, 20 for 20s, GITD dinos, Group of 7, maple canopies, SMLs, a couple of 1/25 oz gold series and probably a few more I'm forgetting.
I just have no bandwidth left for yet another series especially when the mint is not even telling us how many coins will be in the series and when they will be released

I just want to make it very clear, I am not talking about this coin as an investor, but as a collector. I also understand that somethings you buy purely for the enjoyment of the aesthetic with no intention of ever having a return on investment. Item such are reproduction prints will never go up in value but I buy them to make my house more beautiful. Chrome rims for my car improve performance and add a pleasing look but will add nothing to the resale value of the vehicle.
Now that being said we collect money and precious metals. When we buy something we buy it because we enjoy the subject or we find the art pleasing. Some coins are more in demand because of the subject matter. Bird coins will always be more popular because there will always be bird fanatics. The current glass bug coins are going through the roof because the art is amazing. The being said the art is also very nice on the new tree coin but nobody is killing themselves to own one. In my opinion the new tree coin offers better value for the money than the bee coin.
As long as people are going to buy stupid coins like the bee coin the mint will continue to put our more and more product with reduced value. As long as they can sell high priced crap on a stick they will continue to do so. This is a bad thing. If people stop buying stupid over priced coins the mint will begin putting out a better product at a more reasonable price.
As much as people may enjoy the bee coin this love will disappear very quickly should they ever want to sell it. Now granted if you look at the coin every day and love the coin with all your heart who am I to question your decision to purchase one. But speaking numistically there is very little to love about this coin. It neither posses the complex engraving of the group of seven coins nor the art factor of the bird coins or the new spring time tree coin. It is simple a bland coin selling at a much higher premium than the previously mentioned coins.
There is no room in my collection for this coin at this time. I might consider buying one a few years down the road for my daughter at $35. But I will not waste my money buying stupid coins just because they exist.

I'm surprised by the lack of love for this coin, I bought 2. One for a valued customer who is a bee keeping/honey producing supply business. A few grand in profit per month from him makes this coin a no-brainer 'thank-you for your business' piece that also allows me to share my hobbies and build a closer relationship with the customer. The other one I bought for myself, the series 'Animal Architects' intrigues me, a bee's hive, bird's nest, beaver's dam, or spider's web are beautiful and incredible works of engineering found in nature. Bottom line- while the price WAS high, 1/4 oz of a rapidly falling metal for $70, I enjoy my coin's representation and hope my customer enjoys his as well

Just got an E-mail saying 81% sold out. I like the design of the coin but even for me a collector the price is too much. If I were to buy one would do so on E-bay if it goes down in the secondary market.

Quote: As long as people are going to buy stupid coins like the bee coin... As long as they can sell high priced crap on a stick... ouch~ but I appreciate the self contradictions you made. "When we buy something we buy it because we enjoy the subject or we find the art pleasing" but not this bee coin, because it can not be described with anything other than the words low value and stupid... I don't feel anything you stated to be about the art of the coin either. No comment on the colouring, detailing, layout, design, and finish of the coin, just price and weight and there's not enough bee fanatics so this coin is useless. And, art itself is so subjective anyways that I admire your ability to decree one as amazing and another as, quite poetically, crap on a stick. I hope, I mean I know, the RCM keep churning out every higher varieties of coins. They invariably will have toy; to keep profit up and mintage down, they'll have to have variety just have the numbers. Besides, I miss being able to think about a purchase and see one at a store. I can't say I enjoy seeing postal workers and RCM staff pestered to no end by those wanting to collect/cash in on the latest bedazzled limited edition low mintage amazing technology world first coin. @ youngloonie: Terrific idea. I know a bee keeper and beeswax processor that will enjoy this coin as well. It'd make a splendid gift. @ aswitzer: I have quite a few other sets that's pretty dear to me but worth nothing much too. A good idea for a thread? One of the gems of this forum is members posting about the neglected coins of the past. The 50cent wildlife set (was it CC_Ottawa or SPP-Ottawa that brought it up?) @ Ravenzcoin: That's a nice justification of the less vibrant colouring. Never thought of that or really looked a bee with attention, thanks!

Maybe you are forgetting Chinese Lunar Calendar Medallion Set ? I received a mail today with the publicity, maybe they are not selling well, and it's not expensive.
