I have been into coin collecting on and off for the last 15 years. I just started getting back into my hobby and stumbled across this forum while surfing the web for information. The question that I have is when I was going through my collection and doing some research I noticed that I have a 1996 unc. silver eagle which is apparently a key date. The coin is encapsulated and it's starting to tarnish around the edges. Does this affect the value of the coin? How do I go about stopping it? And is there anyway I can fix it? I have 1995 silver eagle that is in a cheap plastic flippy thing and is showing no signs of tarnish. Why would this happen?
Thank you for your time,
Kelly

Sometimes the toning will effect the value. Ugly toning is a negative, but pretty toning adds many multiples in value. There are dips for removing the toning, but I don't recommend their use. Some of them are very toxic and you need to be so careful.

Silver is very reactive to it's environment, and the reaction in this case is the toning.

I bought a 1987 ASE just today, and there is no sign of toning.

Thank you all for the responses. I'm going to replace the holder it's in. I keep all my coins in the same place and this is the only one with signs of toning. Occasionaly I will purchase coins but the majority of the coins I find are in circulation. I feel like I'm treasure hunting. This is the one coin I have that has some value on it, other than a gold american eagle, so I really want to take care of it.
