I just found that on ebay and I have some questions

http://www.ebay.com/itm/24K-Gold-Pl...t_789wt_1186

http://www.ebay.com/itm/24k-Fine-Go...t_922wt_1186

I was looking on the internet to find information about it, but I didn't find anything.

It doesn't seem to have been made by the RCM. So, is it worth nothing then? (face value of 1 cent?)or does it have any collector value ?

Hi Sébastien,

I posted on Coin Forum awhile back about these coins floating around on ebay. These coins are not authorized by the Royal Canadian Mint. All it is in a gold plated penny.

Self - made product.

The first one could be interesting as a "Keepsake" or "Cute gift"

The second - in case if you want to create your own 1-penny set, you may use that Gold Plated Penny (together with .9999 Silver Rose Gold Plated Penny by RCM from the 2012 Silver set).

Nothing more than what you would find from Bradford Exchange or Franklin Mint. Highly overpriced, though not as bad as the the one from the above thread, but still don't expect it to appreciate to any great degree, if any at all.

Thanks to all of you for your help. I am gonna pass on the item, since it's not made by the RCM, 10$ still look too expensive for what it is. I just though the coin looked nice.

$16 dollars of gold plating solution can make you 100 gold plated pennies.

Won't produce a good product. My chrome plater does all sorts of plating and you need to put a base coat to fill in the surface imperfections before adding the gold. The gold layer is so thin that if you don't prep the product properly you will get a nasty finish. You have to nickle plate before the gold plate. This also prevents the copper for leaching into the gold and discoloring the gold, making look like brass.

You will get something that looks like this:

with the amount of commemorative 2012 pennies there are and gold plated ones, it'll soon be more rare to find a circulation one!
