I wouldn't say it isn't serious collecting. But, at this point finding mint sets is no challenge. It might be in the future but now there are sets everywhere and some coin shops will even have one of each set. Even if you use the mint sets there's still some challenge in finding the coins that don't appear in them.

That's definitely true. Just defining what's missing takes a lot of research. It didn't occur to me until a few months ago I needed a completely separate set of coins from 2005-2010 because the ones I had in Mint Sets have a satin finish!
