Hi again!

I was wondering if anyone has heard of the company that graded this coin?
Looking at the pictures below, do you think it was graded correctly?
The only real mark I can find on it is the teeny tiny ding in front of Liberty's mouth. (The dark area is just the reflection of the loupe I'm holding mm away from it.)

I found this coin (link below) that was also graded at MS-65 but it seems to have a lot more dings and scratches than mine does. However, I concede that I know next to nothing about grading coins.

On a side note, about a year ago, before I started to really pay attention to what I had (most of my coins were an inheritance that planned on 'getting around to someday') I brought this coin to a dealer because it was the only gold one. He told me the grading was worthless because the company could not be verified so the coin was worth no more than it's weight in gold. He 'generously' offered me $200. I found him very condescending while I was asking questions which really turned me off, so I declined his offer and never went back. I'm now thinking that was a good decision.

I've never heard of the company but a very nice quarter eagle! I have 2 ms64's, 1896 and 1901, and I have to say this is better than both of mine. I'd have to agree with the grade.

Thanks Eklections!
Do you think it would be worth it to have it graded by one of the 'real' companies?

When faced with a similar decision, I considered the likelihood of me selling the coins. If that's a consideration, I would have PCGS or NGC put a grade on it. It will make it much easier to sell. If this is one you plan to keep for the long haul, then there's no reason to have it stabbed. It made me feel much better knowing I could list it if I ever wanted to cash out and with a high grade coin, it's well worth the cost to get the independent grade that people trust.

Thanks for your input. That's pretty much the way I was leaning for the same reasons.

I started looking through my collection with the idea of selling in mind. But as I investigate them, I find I'm getting kind of attached. It's a slippery slope! :)

I am glad you didn't sell it for 2 bills. The coin looks like it worth much more than that. I am not familiar with the company. I think it could grade MS-64 with a good shot at a MS-65. The one in the link looks quite marked up for a MS-65.

Looks like a very nice coin that could grade MS64 or higher. Luster is very important and this coin could go as high as MS66 with blinding full mint bloom. Dull, muted surfaces might bring it down to MS63 at the low end. Best guess from the images is 64 with a shot at 65.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the input!
The coin is pretty shiny/lustery?/lusterful? in hand. The LED lighting I used for the pictures seems to make it look much duller than it is.

I'm glad I didn't sell it for $200 too. I was pretty clueless at the time so who knows, if the guy hadn't been so flippin' crusty, he may have gotten an awesome deal!

Same here. I'm going to cash my mom out of a bunch of the family coins instead of finding her a buyer.

I get where you're coming from ThisIsFun!
I feel kind of silly because I've had most of this collection for so long and never really gave it any thought. Got bored one afternoon and started looking through what I had. Every day now I find something I think is so cool that I need to find out all I can about it. Why the heck didn't I do this years ago?! Haha

I would think so, depending on your original investment. Although not particularly expensive in circulated grades, this one is a conditional rarity in higher grades, and in PCGS MS65 you'd have a $1500 coin. In terms of technical details, I don't see a whole lot wrong with it, but the very highest points of the coin look like they just_might have wear. That's the hair right above the ear and behind the braid, and the "corners" of the wings either side of the eagle's neck. Even though this example doesn't show any of the easily-acquired dings and marks gold is known for, you might find the TPG will wimp out and call it AU58 rather than creating the value of an MS65.

Another consideration is the originality of the surfaces, which could be difficult to tell here even with photographs of the highest quality.

Hi SsuperDdave, thanks for responding.

I took the pictures with a loupe held up to my Galaxy S3 phone camera, so there's a bit of distortion on the pictures. In person, with the 40X-25mm loupe alone I can't see any wear on the coin at all.

From what I've been reading, it looks like I should gather up a few coins to send in and buy a membership? I don't know how comfortable I would be handing it over to a dealer to send for grading on my behalf.
