Got an e-mail from APMEX yesterday promoting the third coin in the Australian Opal Series: 2013 1 oz Proof Silver KangarooMintage of only 8000 and the premium doesn't seem too outrageous compared to some of the specialty coins out there. Since this is the third coin in a series, I thought I would check to see how much the first two are selling for. From what I could see, either they're no longer for sale or have an asking price of around $199 for the few places that have them in stock. So I figured I would take a chance and order one. Since then, however, I have come to appreciate just how many "limited mintage" series the Perth Mint apparently pumps out on a regular basis. There's the "Australian Seasons" series (5000 mintage), the " Mythical Creatures" series (5000 mintage), the "The Land Down Under" series (5000 mintage), the "Silver Dragons of Legend" series (5000 mintage), etc., not to mention all the Lunar Series coins. It's truly mind-numbing and I'm starting to wonder whether any of these coins have any sort of long-term investment potential whatsoever. Anyway, I just thought I'd ask whether anybody is collecting the Australian Opal series in particular and what you've seen for values on the older issues?

Thanks for the link, Libertad! Is ANZAC day like our Independence Day, Veterans Day, or something unique to Australia?

Have to say I'm not normally a fan of coins with extra crap pasted on the surface, but actually that Opal Kangaroo looks rather nice!, very nice in fact, its tempting even me :D

Well, don't wait too long! APMEX had over 500 of them when I checked yesterday, but now they apparently only have 425 left...

The perth series are hit or miss about long term potential since like you mentioned they do low mintage high premium for everything. At the very least it is a cool coin and cant hurt to have 1.
I do wish the US mint would get a little more creative like Perth, maybe not pump out 100s of series but a little variety or innovation would be nice

AMPEX just told me "Your order must be at least $1500.00 USD to continue."

Seriously? I wonder if that was because you're from outside the U.S. or were trying to pay by bank wire or something...

Must be cause I'm outside US, selected credit card as payment. There are few people selling on ebay. But now I've slept on it I think I will pass this time. It's turning into an addiction and mr bank account is not happy :D

Just got my Opal Series Kangaroo in the mail. Really, really hard to photograph, since the opalescence really only shows up as you move the coin back and forth under the light and the dark center messes up the light balance. Here's the best I could do: [Edit: I decided to try again, this time using only the light provided by the little LED included in the display case. I still think the LED is a gimmick, but I have to admit the picture came out much nicer!] Only 347 left in stock over at APMEX!

Cool coin, Barry. I bought mine on ebay a while back. $120, I think. I've had more luck buying limited run world silver on the secondary market than through the mints. Best rule of thumb I follow is buy what you like and hope interest ultimately outweighs availability. Most of the time it doesn't.

LED lights are not a gimmick. Jewellers use them in their showcases and things sparkle like they shouldn't. They're too good and recently they've become the economical choice for lighting.
