My dealer has a bin of $6 (or 3 for $20) "cleaners". They look pretty average, all are gray and encrusted in dirt. Is this a good price? One has a lot of orange showing through, so I'm thinking of buying it, but I don't want to find out later that the going rate for uncleaned ancients is much lower.

I recently bought 30 for $30. if you take the time to shop around you will find a much better deal. Some people have the time and enjoy the 'hunt'. Some people have no time and will pay any price the seller is asking. It depends on what your time is worth my friend.

Still a poor student, so... nothing :P

I'll look around, but if that one copper looks especially nice I'll buy it, since it even had a bit of a shine. Who knows what's under the gunk :U

I am not one of them thar mathamagicians or nuthin like that, but I do know enough to know that at 6 bucks each that is not a good deal. I also know that if I were to buy any I would buy 2 for $12 and then another for $6 for a total of $18 before I would buy 3 for $20.

As FVRIVS RVFVS says, shop around and you will find a better deal. They can decent quality coins can be had on ebay for around $3 each in lots of 10 or more, and sometimes you can get lucky and get them for a lot less.

They are probably all identifiable enough, even uncleaned, to be late Roman bronzes.
If that is the case, $6 per coin is a bit too much.

Pretty awful price! I get mine about 70c each shipped. The advantage here is that you can rummage and find the rare/nice ones.

Heres a lot on ebay which is $6 per coin:

Thats got some really nice coins - not the tat you might get from that bin.

I also buy failed cleans, just for the fun of identification.

By 'failed cleans', I mean those coins that have been commercially cleaned, but have cleaned up in poor condition, in which most of the information has corroded away with burial.
I can buy silver coins for $10, and larger bronze / brass non LRB's for about the same price.

I have never seen a failed clean LRB in the dealer's junk bin. Such a coin would only be worth a dollar or so.
