So I got a message form ebay telling me one of my listings was removed because apparently I'm not allowed to sell anything from Iran as it is a country embargoed by the U.S. government. The item in question is a simple allotment of about two dozen various circulation coins from Iran, dating from the 1950's to 1980's. The message included several long paragraphs about how they are an American company and respect the government's wishes not to allow the sale of anything pertaining to Iran, Syria, North Korea, etc. regardless of what country the seller happens to be from, even if from a country on better terms with Iran. The reason I'm confused is they singled my listing out over literally hundreds of other ebay listings of things like coins, banknotes, postage, and collectibles from Iran and other such countries. I'm not sure how their system works but they obviously don't police it too well as Iran made items sell all the time. Is it possible some overzealous jerk felt a need to report the listing somehow? Or is something automatic kicked of when certain words are included in the listing and if so which words should I avoid so I can sell this item? This sale obviously does not support the Iranian regime in any way. I got these coins second hand from a box of other world coins, probably from somebody who went there at some point. Now these coins and I are sitting at the desk wondering where to go next...

Its more than likely someone reported it. Unless you were more specific about mentioning Iran that other listings arent and one of the filters caught you (which I'm not sure they have) its more than likely that someone reported it

Thanks Basebal21!
I always suspected they would have some kind of filter system but could never verify it. I did mention "Both Persia and Islamic Republic eras" as part of the description, along with including "Middle East." It could have been the system catching a few too many "bad words" in one place.

It may be though you think an automatic filter would prevent you from listing it in the first place.
I had a gun magazine removed a while ago and it wasnt until the next day it was removed which makes me think there isn't any program actively removing listings as they appear

Hmm, strange. That makes me think it may have just been some person then.
Come to think of it, the listing was up a whole two days before getting removed.

Yes, this is pretty ridiculous. The biggest problem with ebay and this type of enforcement is the inconsistency. Not even so much what is reported and what isn't, but more-so the things they simply chose are not okay and which ones are okay. I won't get into specifics, but it is sometimes political and frequently questionable as pertaining to what they are sensitive to and what they seem to care less about. It's problematic because these decisions are made by a few higher ups who seam to have their own agenda which is never good with a publicly traded company that deals with a very diverse public.

Just a few days ago I got an email from ebay telling me one photo in an auction was too small with a long rambing discourse about picture size requirements. At that time I had no active auctions. I did check the listing number they provided, and that listing was several months ago! You have to wonder about ebay. (I just relisted the item using the same pictures. We'll see what happens.)
