Tees
Usually, unless I am wrong you should be able to get those for melt value. Today's melt value is about $18.60. You might try to talk these guys down some. You might try a different shop. I too love the big silver coins. They are the best!

U.S. Silver dollars rarely go for melt value unless they are culls. Common, average circulated 1921 Morgan and Peace dollars should retail for about $25 these days with pre-1921 Morgans bringing a bit more. $30 is high unless they are XF/AU, better dates, or maybe pre-1921 Morgans in VF without problems.

1921 Morgans and common date Peace are usually lumped together for bulk pricing. Not 1921 Peace dollars.

Pre-1921 Morgans are generally regarded as a different category when pricing.

at my LCS:

lesser pre-1921 and 1921 Morgans, and common date Peace = $30 each

a little better (up to xf I've found, I think) common Pre-1921 Morgans = $33 each

Wow, that sounds pretty pricey with silver at 23 bucks an ounce. You'd do much better investment wise buying bars or junk silver at or near spot.

Cheers.

$28-$30 here in VA for circulated junk bin coins. I've been buying 100 oz bars instead. Ten dollar premium over melt is crazy for 3/4 oz silver. nlp

Look at the price of ASE's, bullion bars and rounds and even scrap silver.. Even with the drop in silver prices numismatic items still hold a premium.. So why would we expect Morgan's or Peace dollars to suddenly be sold for a dollar or two over melt? Are you guys really finding junk silver, bars, rounds and such for a dollar or two over spot? Because I'd have to assume not to close being that over the last week this site has been swamped with topics wondering why the premiums are still so high...

$30 seems about right for "junk" bin buys.. Dealers (in my area) are buying at $25-$28 and selling culls for $30... And alot of there inventory (morgans/peace) they probably bought weeks ago for $25-$30, so of course there not going to sell them for $22-$23 and take a loss with the spot for these coins under $19. ASE's were selling at $28 at my local show last weekend.. Still well over spot.. And people expect 100 year old silver coins that are arguably one of the most popular collected series of ALL coins to sell for around melt?

At the show last weekend there was a guy looking to buy tubes of Morgans for $17-$18 each... And couldn't understand why the prices were still so high, we got to talking and he said he had totally different expectations for for show and prices in general. I went online on my phone and showed him that even APMEX and other major online dealers arnt even selling bulk Morgan's for close to spot... So I definitely wouldn't assume a smaller time LCS would... it would ruin them..

I'd had to agree with the comment that buying large purchases (100oz+) is the best and possibly only way to get a smaller premium over spot right now. Coins and even NCLT are definitely holding there value above spot. It doesn't really bother me... I stack silver, but only NCLT, bars, rounds and such, not junk silver/Morgan's.

Don't get me wrong I do collect Morgan's (primarily in fact) but I pay alot over spot for mine and have no problem doing so as I only buy high grade Morgans, heck, I even pay a premium over the grade price if I like the toning. I mean a MS-65 Morgan isn't selling for less than it did two weeks ago so why would you assume a cull would?

Although you may only be buying them for there silver weight there still a 100+ year old collectable coin.. And collectable is the key word... More so than silver weight. This is exactly the reason I don stack cull silver coins, the coins itself will always be valued more than its metal content when prices drop. (And for the simple fact that people generally don't like to loose money... Obviously prices will rise if silver does again, but making extra money and loosing money are complete opposites for a business.. Make or break)

With silver prices down like they are, when I can find them They are usually priced at $25-$27 these days for any and all Morgans and Peace with the exception of CC's. I do not have any LCS in my area, the closest is nearly an hour away so I am buying from a select few pawn shops who pay half of the values listed on a web site who's name is not allowed to be mentioned here. I have been lucky enough to get as low as $22 & change, but had to buy a large quantity to get that price.

Bought 8 Peace dollars in the last week. Prices for average ones are $28-32 at my local coin shop. On one transaction for 4 of them they totaled $126. I offered $120 and the dealer took it because he wanted to make multiple sales. Considering that one of them was in AU grade and might have sold for around $40 I feel like I got a good deal.

I don't see all the empathy for dealers. We all paid big bucks not too long ago for our silver too. If we needed to sell it back to the dealers today they'd be paying us way BELOW spot with no apologies. I quit buying at my LCS because they've raised their premiums dramatically. I am actually doing better on ebay for numismatic items I want.

NathanASE- I could't agree with you more! I would never expect to find a Morgan or Peace dollar for spot. A very good argument, sir.
