Hi, could someone please help identify this coin? I believe it's Roman because of the SC on the back, but there is no emperor and most of the writing has worn off.

If you could also give me an approximate value that would be great!

Cheers
Andy

Is this taken from a coin shop?
A reputable seller?
Or are you selling it?

This is a rare sestertius of the emperor Augustus, struck at the time of his death in 14 AD. IMO the coin is real, but this type has been faked.

I agree Ron, Looked through Forums Fake list and also Forgery Network, not match. The Patina looks real.

echizento: Fair call. So far OK, but it needs further investigation.
The remaining lettering above the elephants looks a little TOO sharp to me, and I would love to be proven wrong, but at least it would be enough for me to take it to a very experienced guy to discuss it with him.

If I was wrong: WOW! I would have a valuable and rare coin.

Fortunately for me, I would be able to take it to arguably the leading expert on ancients in Australia, but not many of us have this sort of easy access.

The "GVSTO" appears to be one of the highest points on both coins..leading me to believe its real...but who am I?

Congrats my friend, a mighty fine piece.

that's awesome! I don't know what a good price for it would be, but I know I can't afford it.

The letters on the obverse appear to me to have been tooled. I base this assumption on the appearance of the reverse. While the reverse has moderate patination (although the letters VIAV also seem to have been 'enhanced') the obverse has little to no patination and the letters are thick and sharp. I think the work was done by an expert but alteration is always a questionable undertaking. I might be wrong .... I am not holding it in hand. I think the coin has value (Sear lists at $240 in Fine condition) But perhaps sending it out to someone like Mssr Sear would clear up any doubts about the coin better than us debating it.
I recently (last weekend) purchased a different variety which I am still awaiting. The one I found appears from the photo at least to have an incredibly thick emerald glossy patina. Which if nothing else is almost as good a guarantee of extreme age and original condition as one can find. Anything can be faked. And I may have been duped. But I doubt it.
