Sure looks like fun.

On a whim I recently bought a small lot of cleaned ancients (Roman Procurators, Judaea) and am looking forward to learning about them.

I think I'd really enjoy the process of cleaning dirty old coins and then identifying them.

I've browsed many sources of lots and am not sure which to buy. I'd like to buy a lot of ~10-100 uncleaned coins. From what I've read, depending on the seller and description, I should expect bronze only, mostly late Roman coins and some or many unidentifiables.

Ideally I'd like the lot to yield some earlier coins in better condition. Can anyone recommend a good source for such a lot, preferably based on personal experience with the seller? Other newbie advice is also appreciated. I'm in the process of reading everything in this Ancient forum, following various links, bookmarking resources, etc.

There are some sellers on ebay that sell higher grade lots, but they are going to be expensive, and IMO too expensive. Years ago I would buy lots of 1000 coins when the lots weren't too expensive. Now the cost is running about 2K pre 1000. The lots are all picked through and any real good coins are removed. Every once in awhile they will miss something and you get lucky. Out of a lot of 1000 coin if there are 300-400 good coins you are lucky. If you are looking for early empire coins than you are better off buying single coins from a dealer.

You are in the US, the best seller in the US I know of, that sells uncleaned LRB's, is Rasiel.

Thanks.

I just ordered a small assortment from Dirty Old Coins. I'll give it a whirl and see if I enjoy cleaning and ID'ing the coins. If so, maybe I'll start looking for a larger lot.

I've bookmarked dozens of other online sources and will search this forum for any opinions regarding the various sellers.

you're going to find mainly 4th centry coins, a few 3rd and 5th century. as ski (echizento) suggested, if you want early coins it may be better to buy individual coins instead of lots...I've switched to that to some extent myself.

ThisisFun, good luck with your coin bug :-) Can't wait for my uncleaned lot to get to me. Maybe someone missed something. Got 50 coming. All well at least something to do.
