Something in the copper causes the shading. Not red or brown, is there a name for this?
Thank you.

In the states we call them wood grain cents or woodies. Caused by improper alloy mixture.

I love wood grain pennies and started to collect them (like I needed something else to start looking for) a few months ago. Some of these coins can be stunning in the hand.

Dave H - Love the 1920 woody. I've got this similar one. They must have had a really badly mixed batch of metal that year.

I am a huge fan of any penny similar to the 1991 you have pictured. In my opinion they have fantastic eye appeal.
