Please help. I am a bit confused on this. When buying Proof or Mint sets.

1. US Proof set consist of the 'S' mint coins?
2. US Mint Sets consist of all mints (PDS) or just P & D mints?

My first Proof US Proof contained all coins in 'S' mint.
So when referring to Proof Sets these are the 'S' minted coins?

Thanks,

Like everything else with US coins, the sets vary by years. Keep in mind that proof coins are struck differently than business strikes. This is what gives them the mirrored fields and some with frosted devices.

From 1936-1964, proof sets were all minted in Philadelphia. From 1968-present, all proof sets are minted in San Francisco.

Uncirculated sets are a little more complicated. 1947-1955, 1968-1974, and 1980-81 include coins from all three mints. This doesn't mean that there is one of each coin from all three mints. Usually, there is just one additional coin from the San Francisco Mint. In the 1980-81 sets, it's the SBA dollar. I think it's just the cent for the other issues.

All of the rest of the years not covered above include only Philadelphia and Denver minted coins.

As an aside, from 1965-1967, the only sets produced were Special Mint sets which are sligthly less quality than proof sets but slightly better than uncirculated sets.

Hope this helps.

The 1970 Mint set has S-minted cent and nickel. I don't know why, but I was surprised to see the nickel.

There were business strike nickels for the years 1968 ,69 and 70 that were put out into circulation with the S- mint stamp from the San Francisco mint. There were also proof coins minted for those years also.
