The neighborhood kids are always wanting to do chores to get money so they can buy candy. So I decided to start paying them in gold dollars, two dollar bills or colorful foriegn notes from my junk box. I just get a few gold dollars every time I go to the bank (they like them best). Hopefully some of them catch the numismstic bug instead of buying candy.

Good idea. Also, paying with those State Quarters may also do a little inspiring. At coin shows I always ask dealers what the do with Folders and Albums they take in. Usually they say they take all the coins out, put them in flips for selling at the shows. Then throw out the Folders and Albums. I've asked many dealers if they could just bring some to the next coin show for me. Some have done thie and I give all the ones I don't want to near by schools. Usually almost all the ones I get go to schools in the area. Hopefully this may start some kids collecting coins.

I saw a movie with my nephew (14 years old) today and I asked which restaurant we could go to afterwards, he said we should flip a coin to see which one to go to. I took out my 1972 Ike dollar and told him to flip it to where we would go. He told me I could pick the restaurant if he could keep the coin. He keeped the coin and wouldn't even flip it because he was afraid of dropping it on the ground. Doing my part to get the kids involved. 3 Ike dollar's to date giving away to kids

Great ideas. I have a small reserve of Buffalo nickels that are interesting, but have no numismatic value. I'm going to get them out into circulation and put some of them into 2x2's to hand-out during Halloween.

Success! One of them caught the numismatic bug! Every day he brings around some new finds from change. I went and got him the whitman coin folders for lincoln cents, jeff. nickels and Roosevelt dimes and a Red Book and let him cherrypick my change jar. I'm taking him to the local coin cub meeting next wednesday. It's good, he has been having trouble lately and numismatics is something he can get immersed in and stay the heck out of trouble.

Before W&K (wife and kids) I used to travel quite a bit, always with an eye out for picking up a nice assortment of the local coinage. I would routinely carry around a handful of US coins to trade with kids I'd meet along the way. I suppose they thought they were "making money" by exchanging local coins for US ones, though it did get them to stop and look at what was in their pockets (or, in some cases, in their parents' change jar back home). After I found my first 1993 Norman Manley 5 dollar commemorative coin circulating in Jamaica I started showing it off to the local kids, asking for more. Several of them reappeared later with examples of their own to trade. I hate to think of them getting in trouble for nicking it out of their mom's purse, but we all benefited from the exchange. I'm considering starting a coin and stamp club at my kids' elementary school once they get a little older (one's heading into 3rd grade, the other 1st). Should be fun! cheers, tbg

Quote: The neighborhood kids are always wanting to do chores to get money so they can buy candy. In what foreign place do you live? (sarcasm) I'm a father of two kids under 13. I can't get my son away from XBox live long enough to do anything, even when there's a chance to earn a few bucks. My kids, their friends, and most other kids for that matter, seem quite lazy today, and want everything handed to them. I am fortunate enough to get my daughter involved in a little roll hunting, she likes to collect wheat cents, but her attention span is limited, she's only eight.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72
