As a fairly new hobbyist it has surprised me how the third party graders have been taking a beating here lately on how the consistency of how they grade especially ICCS. Just wondering what is the worst mistaken grade anyone has every seen? Additionally in your opinion what is the most over/under graded coin in your collection?

I have seen examples of horror stories in almost every TPG holder... sometimes I wonder if it is a typo, because we see typos in descriptions and even years... To err is human...

Quote: To err is human... Exactly. Unless they find a way to get computers to grade coins (which I hope will never happen), then you have to give the graders some credit for the amount of coins they grade and the accuracy that is expected for the experience they have. I would like to know what some of the worst people have seen are though...

I have read that computers are already in service. They do a preliminary determination. BUT- all their work is then passed by a human check for agreement purposes.

None of the TPGs know how to grade Indian Head cents with consistency. In fact, the last PCGS IHC that I came across was a XF40 coin graded at AU55, with the 4th diamond etched. Yes, it was actually fake, etched, altered coin and this false diamond brought the fake grade. Saddest PCGS story possible.

@lambecolin, yes, now that is useful. They are using technology to make the grading easier for them. As long as a person is still looking at the coins.

As far as Canadian stuff goes, I bought a 1938 Canada dollar NGC AU55 off of ebay, that when I got it in hand was not better than a EF40, with awful eye appeal, I ended up getting a beautiful PCGS AU58 of the same date, so it's actually pretty funny putting the two side by side and seeing how "on paper" there should be only a tiny difference between the two... best lesson in "buy the coin not the slab" you can imagine...

Interesting how the originator mentions ICCS as an example of a TPG, but the 'horror' stories are other TPG.....any ICG coin will have a story when crossing it to another TPG

Very true Tripoli. So perhaps ICCS is not as bad as others make it out to be. The message seems to be stay away from holders that aren't ICCS or CCCS for Canadian coins as who knows what you're getting.
