Hello all-

I bought this coin on ebay recently and was wondering which date variety it is (i.e., large oval 9, small oval 9, or round 9). The only image of this coin I've found was supposedly of the small oval 9 variety, though it's hard to compare among three varieties with just one image! In my coin the first 5 is lower than the second, which was not the case in the "small oval 9" image I saw. So... large oval 9 then? Any opinions?

Thanks in advance,
thebugguy

I have a few date varieties from Peru, so for the sake of conversation I looked around and found a coin with a different date style. Which one do you think this is--the "small oval 9"? To my eyes, the date on yours looks like a "round 9", but I can't find any documentation. Is this the scarcer variety?

DVC-
Thanks for adding the photo, though I'm still not sure what to think. Between yours and mine, I would say yours is smallish and oval while mine definitely looks roundish. However...

This is the only other photo I could find floating out there on the internet- it's from the catawiki.com site:

http://www.catawiki.com/catalog/coi...1955-small-9 (sorry, still learning how to embed photos in replies)

This link claims the pictured coin is a "small oval 9", but it looks a lot closer to mine (roundish) than to yours (smallish oval). Again, the position of the first 5 is quite different between mine and this image. So, I guess I still don't know which is which. My hunch is that there are probably lots of variants out there and the three described in the catalog do not adequately cover them.

Speaking of the catalog: what does it mean if values are listed for only two out of the three varieties? I'm supposing it does not mean one is necessarily much more rare (in this case, the round 9 variety), just that not enough is known about the variety to assign a value to it. Is this an appropriate interpretation? I suppose I'll have to crack it open and read the fine print again...

cheers,
tbg

Hmm...I'd say the 9 on your coin is larger than the one I picture or at that link. I'll assume the designation is that straightforward. I only suspected one was scarcer because sometimes Krause doesn't list a price for scarcer varieties--but that's totally a guess. Most of my experience in Peru is with the overdates on the tiny silver 1/2 Dinero coins.

In the absence of additional evidence I suppose I'll default to the fact that statistically it is most likely the most common variety (large oval 9), even though it looks round to me.

And yes, the Peruvian 1/2 Dineros are cute and fun! I have about 20 of them under my belt (though who knows if I've attributed them properly!).

That makes sense. I often hope I find a scarcer coin, because sometimes I'm lucky that way.
Yeah--the 1/2 Dinero varieties are fun! I have about a dozen, and have posted a few pics to CCF.
Here's a link to one of my better coins.
