My 7-year-old is in Cub Scouts and "collecting" is the latest challenge. He wanted to collect coins (surprise!) so I bought a Dansco Memorial penny album for him. I took $5 from his piggy bank and bought 10 rolls of pennies. We went through them all to find coins he needed and then swapped out the duplicates with close relatives. He now has 63/120 Memorial pennies with minimal effort! He is about to learn that each additional penny gets harder and harder to find. What a great learning experience! I still remember when I was a Cub Scout sorting through wheats looking for the elusive 1909 VDB!

That was EXACTLY his response when he found out where the funds came from! I told him all the pennies in the album are his, I bought the album for him, and we can take the duplicate pennies back to the bank to get larger coins for his piggy bank. But he needs to fund his own roll hunting adventures!

I applaud your approach. It is a good lesson for him. I did nearly the same thing for a young boy who is interested in coins - gave him a Memorial cent folder with one or two of the earlier coins in it and suggested he roll hunt for the rest. He uses his own money to get rolls from the bank and has even found a few wheat cents so far. His mother told me he even found a 1906 Indian Head cent recently which has given him even more incentive to keep roll hunting. I am having fun watching his excitement as he makes good finds.

He's having fun and he has already found a 1970S penny from rolls and pocket change. The 2009 pennies are very scarce, though. One thing I noticed was an off-center strike. I'm not sure if he is going to keep it or sell it. I was also quite thrilled to find two 1982 pennies. One is large date and one is small date. One is Cu and the other is Zn, so I showed him how to weigh them on my digital scale.
I have a bunch of old Memorial pennies so if he starts coming up skunked on roll hunting I may "spike" the rolls with one or two goodies to keep him interested. I don't want to give him a false sense of expectation, but I don't want him to lose interest, either.

All the memorials cn be found except it can be quite challenging in the eastern part of the country to find the '68-S due to low mintage and the '73-S because the cent lost so much value between '68 and '73 that it didn't circulate as much.
It's getting quite challenging to find nice zinc issues for the early dates. Even honest XF's tend to have ugly staining and almost everything with luster has spotting.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Maybe Dad can buy him a box of cents as a surprise for him for being a good son as I sure he is. Dad just make sure its a box with older looking coins. If you are on good terms with the tellers they should be happy to do that for you. Oh yes you did right by him making him buy the first cents for his album that you bought him.

Quote: What a great learning experience! Yes and it may well be to watch Dad if he needs money. Nice to get him started on coins early but come on, robbing his piggy bank. Something he will still remember in the future you know.

I didn't rob his piggy bank for the Dansco. I paid for that out of my own pocket. It was the "seed money" that came out of his piggy bank. Right now he has 94 pennies in the albums and $4.06 in duplicate LMCs. I had him get rid of the shield pennies in swaps. His cousin (one block away) also collects pennies, so now it's time to arrange an old fashioned swap party!
