Exactly as the title suggests,
I rented a second, larger safe deposit box at another bank.
The keys, lease, and sign in all went as usual.
I Went in today with my stuff to put in.
Signed in used their key and mine to open took the box into the cubicle and opened a crammed full box belonging to someone else.
The bank had a second set of keys for this box, and rented it to me!
Whoa!

Wow, I have never heard of that happening before.

What was the banks response when you told them?

"that's never happened before, ever"

The box I ended up renting was one that was for sure closed, she remembered closing it.

I said that the person would've been better to have their stuff in a shoebox under their bed.

I was very alarmed because if it was empty and I filled it the owner could've came to fill it and taken my coins.

Wow, that should have never happened, obviously. And it certainly never happened when I worked for the bank. Yeah, what did they say?

Probably goes without saying: Bank need to check their records and see who owned the box before you, and one of you needs to be sure that that prior owner gets all their stuff back.

I wouldnt be using a safe deposit box in a bank like that...

In fact, Id keep the security in my own hands rather than risk that.

There is no chance that I would leave my stuff in a safety deposit box at this bank. I have always wondered about stuff like this but never heard of it before and given that the bank would do nothing to make you whole again should you lose items this way I am glad I have never chosen to chance it. Don't trust banks, and every story like this just reaffirms my distrust.

I'm pretty sure the waiver form you sign when you get a safe deposit box is that they are not liable for what happens to your stuff while it is in there.

While the vault will probably not get robbed and you are protected that way you cannot be protected against minimum wage job fair hires they have working there and it would be your word against them that your stuff walked out of your box and they can always fall back on the waiver you signed.

I too would not have a safe box in a place with such loose rules and regulations. An extra set of keys? Something is wrong with that.

The timing is perfect as I was gonna rent one Monday, now it ain't gonna happen. I didn't know about a waiver, heck why pay someone to hold your stuff and then they aren't responsible for the contents, that just seems unacceptable to me.

Thanks for saving my, you know.

An extremely rare set of circumstances has happened for me to have this experience.
(2005p non mag in the first set I checked was another one)
The owner of the box #227 lost the key.
The new keys were made. (that explains the extra set of keys)
Somehow the keys seemed "available"
I walked in and rented a box.
The box I rented was not checked to be empty.(important!)
I went in the next day with a bag and signed in.
(their stuff was light) slide out the inner box and enter a cubicle with a desk and lock the door.
Behold! A bunch of stuff inside the metal box!
(ring the bell for service)

For me it's about not having all your eggs in one basket.
My insurance on my home clearly states that they'll cover $500 cash and $500 numismatic
Also...
Coverage for belongings temporarily stored away from your home (storage units, sdb)
I am out of the country next week and won't leave everything in one place, easy pickings.

I understand your reasoning completely and I am sure the odds of losing something are very, very small BUT I still don't trust banks and your experience just adds to my skepticism of them. As was mentioned, most of the SD agreements I have absolve the bank of any claim of loss on the contents of your box. What am I paying you for then?

Also, why would they make a 2nd set of keys to the box if one was lost? If you lost the keys to your house would you just go have a new set made or would you change the locks? Maybe I am just one of the overly paranoid people but I don't like unaccounted for keys being able to access areas that are supposed to be secure.

The company I work for had many keys with tags that say "company name - front door"! Wowee
Nobody thought about it until I told them how crazy that was.
