I'm interested that his neck is crossed by many scratches.

I have somewhere an EF thaler of about 1865 where the emperor's neck is criss-crossed by scratches.

Were these emperors so hated that people wanted to (figuratively) decapitate them ?

Is this a well-known phenomenon on Austrian coins ?

I think it is from a scratch test people would have coins made of non precious metals covered in a layer of thin precious metal

I'm not in numismatics, I happen to have this coin, interested me how much coin has lost value because of these scratches, and whether it can be polished, as is scratched the surface, not deep!?

Hello and welcome.

Your coin is, as wjl stated, a silver 1/2 scudo from the Italian state of Lombardy-Venetia, under Austrian rule. Here is the catalogue reference for it.

As you can see, the coin would be worth hundreds of dollars, if the scratches were not there. Unfortunately, there's no way to make such scratches go away. They're too deep. No collector will want to pay very much for such a badly damaged coin. I wouldn't have thought it would be worth much more than $20 or so.

I'm also interested in why the coin appears to be a yellowish colour. Has it been gold-plated, with the silver showing through the scratches? Furthermore, there seems to be additional damage near the crown and date. I suspect this coin has been gold-plated and mounted into a piece of jewellery, and subsequently removed. The scratches would have then been done later, by somebody trying to find out if it really was a solid gold coin - which of course it is not.

Thanks for your answers!
An acquaintance of mine wants to sell me the coin for € 200, and says it's worth a lot more. I also think that someone gild coin formerly, and that someone is wearing a checked by a jeweler, and from there came the a scratch. If I can not get more than € 200, and you says it can not, I'll leave him a coin.
