As your collecting grows you will see a lot of this type of thing, old coinage with later marks/stamps etc. A lot of the time certain marketing 'firms' had a need to supply types of tokens and it was basically cheaper to bang some letters onto old pennies than to have a die made or get some cast, generally speaking though, it is mainly down to people just stamping them for either fun or practice for stamping something else.
