I PERSONALLY run a Minelab and I would highly recommend one to anyone else.

The OP asked about Minelab and then commented on their high price. I took that to mean that he was looking for a good machine at a good price, hence a good "value". I agree 100% that Minelab makes a superior machine but not everyone can pay those prices. Most people don't go from a Kia to a Mercedes...

My original comment stands.

Point taken jb, but even at the price of the AT 'pro' there are better machines out there. It might just be a case that you used a garrett to begin your hobby and therefore like the machines? I just find it unusual for someone that has experience, such as you obviously do and also runs a Minelab machine to recommend a garrett. I think they are ok, in their place in the market but I personally wouldn't recommend one to anyone. I think its possibly a better bet to spend a bit more and get a machine that can deliver good results. No hard feelings jb. Regards MD.

I'm using a Minelab Xterra - 705 for about a year and I'm very happy with this machine ... have different sets to help you in different terrains like , sand , salty areas and you can use a different frequencies just changing the coil , and work for gold too... by the price is a good machine....

I wouldn't say that Garrett could never make a machine to match a Minelab. That is a very inaccurate statement. Granted, Minelab is making more capable machines than Garrett is presently.

Also, Minelab is mass producing mds, just like Garrett and all the other md manufacturers. You don't have a factory in Malaysia, and repair facilities in multiple countries for a company that sparingly produces its product. Not to mention the fact that they are very popular on 3 of the worlds seven continents.

With that said, for the OP, if you don't want to spend too much on a Minelab, perhaps look at the Xterra series. Or look for a used Minelab.

Roscue2 I do appreciate that garrett have a lot of influence in the market and I also appreciate that for a new user they are excellent switch on and go machines, but garrett will never make machines in the same league as ML do. They called one of their latest machines the 'pro' and it's crap!! If you turned up at a rally with a garrett everyone would laugh at you and that is a fact. The way the machines are made are very different. I am not prepared to spend my time debating over a a detector that is rubbish on here or anywhere else. I have used the garrett machines, tested garrett machines and wrote an article a few years back on garrett machines. They are crap. They are totally for new users. They have a widespread name because they are cheap machines that a child can use and spend half their profit on advertising their product. The machines that really produce results don't need to do this and they don't. If you seriously want to stand by garrett as a machine of excellence, then you do that. I have nothing more to add to the subject accept this.... if garrett make such wonderful machines, why don't you swing one? Good day, MD.

MetDet71 you got the point. I never ever seen Minelab merchandising until past week when I saw two videos. But about Garrett there are many more merchandising.

I wasn't arguing with you about anything. Simply pointing out that the use of the word "never" does not make sense. How could you possibly know what lies in the future of a company? Tomorrow Charles Garrett could decide to sell Garrett to another company, and they could take the company in a completely different direction in terms of developing md technology. Likewise, ML could be sold to a company that drags it down into the abyss of bankruptcy. With that said, the chances of either happening are very unlikely.

As for the use of advertising, what company doesn't advertise? Heck, Minelab has better commercials than Whites. The way a company advertises does not point out much about the companies product.

And yes, I own 2 garretts, and a whites. Would like to try the 705 though. Or maybe a Tesero Vaquero.

The Terra 705 is a nice machine to use, not tried the Tesoro Vaquero yet but you can get a new one for just over $400 and it comes with a free bumper sticker.

I've used several different Minelabs. Get a used Explorer 2, Epay for about $500 US.
It blows my new Etrac right out of the water.

Good machine at a good price, well worth a punt. The seller sounds genuine too.

If you can afford it buy it cipriani. You will be set for many years with that machine.

ALL of my hunting buddies run a T2 SE. Their finds speak for themselves and the price is excellent.

MetDet71 I would not call myself a novice. I have used detectors, gradiometers and magnetometers since the late 80's for a work. My current personal favorite is the Garret AT Pro and my wife uses an Ace 250. Yes the Ace 250 is switch on and go and yes it has issues with sandy beaches. But for the price it is hard to beat. The AT pro is significantly different from the ACE250 and if you treat it the same you are not going to do well with it and quite possibly think its "Crap" I would not recommend using the standard settings as you might just as well use an ACE250. If you take the time to learn the difference in the way that the DD coil works and learn the manual features that the AT pro has. I find it hard to fault the machine at the price. Granted its not a high end machine costing thousands. But I have never been laughed at for swinging a Garrett. And all the finds I have posted here on the forum have been found with a Garrett. I have used other brands but I am doubtful that my finds will increase significantly enough to warrant the additional expenditure. So you and I will have to disagree on the Garrett thing and no I don't work for them.

nohope587 as I said earlier I am not going to debate over the garrett machines any more. If thats as far as you would like to go with your hobby thats your choice, I personally need a higher quality machine to give me the results I am looking for and not something that was based on another machine but fails to deliver in areas I consider important. So to sum up, people that start in general with a garrett machine tend to like the machines, whichever model it may be. But as to satisfy the OP, in "my" opinion if you are someone looking to spend a lot of time in this hobby then a Minelab is without a doubt a far more superior machine. Just for a future reference if you are posting on a thread just to say someone's opinion is wrong, then I would much rather you sent me a private message. Not for fear of looking silly but simply it would give me time (when I do have time) to discuss the issue thoroughly without losing site of the OP. I am going to take what you said into account though and for the next few weeks or so I will be taking an at pro along to my latest venture. I promise that I will give it my full attention for at least 2 or 3 days out of the 7 spent searching and if I prove myself wrong then I will begin a new topic on which I will apologize to the garrett lovers out there. I will also post finds made by the garrett and also finds made by 2 other machines. It might not end the difference in opinion but if the at pro does surprise me then I will have to give it a fresh review as it where.

Regards,

MD.

I would like to read your reviews, MetDet71. I am very inclined to buy a Garrett Ace 250, an then, if I follow up with the hobby, I will need so much information when buying a superior equipment.
