That G-6 is pretty interesting. I've never seen one grade that low before.
The problem with these coins is finding them at a fair price. The supply is pretty low, but demand is also very low. There are extremely few collectors for these pieces in anything other than type. With the price of gold where it is....even with the recent drop...most of them don't really have any business going for higher than spot (plus a tiny premium). Now pretty much every seller seems to be asking spot plus a bunch for the common dates presumably because there is this misguided view that old US gold has to be more valuable than modern bullion. Some pieces are obviously rare in numismatic terms, but many are not.
I sort of like them. The 2.5 are a bit small IMO. I've become more interested in gold than I was a few years ago, but still not enough to want to collect them. I do prefer the coronet to the "indian princess" personally, but I'm not sure if others feel the same.

i just purchased my first gold and its an 1843 i obviously paid WAY over spot for it but I wanted an old gold piece and this did it for me for no other reason than I walked into the auction with a few minutes left and sniped it at what HA/TT were hammering near in recent offerings. https://goccf.com/t/149614i am going to nab a few gold coins but for type purposes only. I will not get into collecting these as a set.

I agree with you about ridiculous premiums for "old gold"--especially those with high mintage. In my collection, I am targeting the coins with tiny mintage--or those with small survival rates. These seem to be the most interesting, and I have been able to find some good deals. Thanks again for sharing.

One reason to revive the thread would be to add some additional eye candy - anyone have other recent QE pick ups to share? [/URL] ET

Well, I suppose I can contribute. Though I don't own any quarters, halves, eagles, doubles, my step-father does. Here's one from his collection: Maybe I'll buy it from him when I get the money! I really want a pre-33 gold.

Here is one I bought of e-bay I was also trying to win one in the G-4, but I was outbid at the last monument. I like them because they look old and most collectors don't buy these in lower grades.

I like the color of the '66-S and the '57-S is well-worn, but a nice one indeed. Ah the stories it could tell. Here's the '43-C Small Date's sister - ET

This is my oldest $2.5 gold piece - 1854. This was given to me by grandmother in the early 1980's.
