I am not really a collector of Islamic coins, but I am a collector of the fascinating. 11 mm x 0.48 g My picture "The coins of the Indian Sultanates"#AS24; Rajgor -. Very rare, the rarest of all Sindi silver qanhari dirhams according to "the coins of the Indian Sultanates". "Isa" is the arabic form of the name "Jesus". Sind was the first part of India to come under muslim rule. The earliest Amirs issued small silver coins (1/4 dirhams) - all carrying the name of the Amir, but without any dates, so they are very difficult to date exactly, especially since the Amirs of Sind are virtually unknown from other sources. These coins are generally not rare, but are difficult to find in high quality, like this coin.
This is the sellers info

Islamic coins are even more difficult for me to ID than Greek coins. Wish I could help but I have no idea.

I have a couple of these little tiny Sind dirhams. Quote: ...especially since the Amirs of Sind are virtually unknown from other sources. Apparently, the Emirs of Sind were Kharijites, or some similar Islamic sect which the subsequent Sunni rulers of Sind found to be heretical. So any records the Emirs kept about themselves were systematically destroyed. We know these rulers only by their surviving coins. We don't even know in which order they reigned, or if there might have been several different rulers sharing the same name at different times; the catalogues therefore list them in alphabetical rather than chronological order.

I was under the impression that the name Jesus on the coin does not refer to Big J but to the proper name of the Amir. That would make sense, but the script redundantly mentions Jesus, is one of the Jesus' Amirs Jesus and the other Big J or do they both apply to the Amir. I find it interesting when we find coins of lost civilizations, or civilizations of which the particulars have been lost to time. This is what I like about ancient coins, there is some level of conjecture here. I appreciate the background info Sap, its the most that I have ever found available on these coins.
BTW Sap- I never see you posting any coins, where you hiding them? I know you must have a huuuuge collection, to command such numis-knowledge.
Post up some coins - its been slow as of late. (I would love to see some of your favs)

Sorry, guys - I've been a bit distracted lately, and haven't had much time on the computer, or with the coin collection.
As for sharing photos, my collection tends to run more towards quantity rather than quality - which means, particularly for my ancients collection, that a lot of them simply aren't very photogenic. Not with my meagre photo skills, anyway.
I went to a coin club meeting with an ancients theme a few months ago; I took a page of coins along. But when the editor asked for a couple of pictures to go in the club Magazine, it turned out that only one of them was good enough for me to make a printable image.

OK, due to popular demand - here are my two Sind mini-dirhams. First up is one from Emir "Mohammed", G&G# AS25. It's pretty well-worn but the distinctive OSO shape of the name "Mohammad" is clearly readable in the right-hand picture. Second, we have one from Emir "Ali", G&G# AS15. Much nicer condition, and much nicer contrast make it more photogenic.

Very nice.
I have a long way to go before I can differentiate and understand these types.

Sap- Great coins, thanks for posting. You speak down on your coins, yet I don't see what you mean, I think they are both very nice, and encourage you to "get in" on some of the other threads, when applicable. Your coins although worn are on much rounder and more complete flans, which is great.
Doucet- Ha me too!
