I am very interested in proof sets, and I was just wondering what are the best years to get?

Besides a couple of dates, the proof sets have been pretty poor price performers. Many dates can now be had at less than their issue price. The silver sets are the way to go IMHO.
Rest in Peace

My parents, purchased proof sets from the mid/late 70's till last year. And as been said a lot of them are below the issue price not to mention shipping costs. Since they bought a set for themselves and one each for their grand kids.
Neither of my parents were active collectors, mostly directly from the mint.
My mother would be upset if she found out that the price for them is so low, way below what they cost.
Like it has been said, always buy what you like first.

I collect Proof Sets because I love them. I wouldn't choose them as an investment.

The prices are pretty reasonable for all of them. It's tough to say which ones to buy, because they've got different appeal. I love pre-1964 sets, because I love the Franklin half dollars. I also love the early 70's proof sets (and Brown Ike's) for the Eisenhower dollar. The sets that I really don't like too much are the middle 70's to early 80's. The coins are dull and boring. IMHO, the biggest disaster of a coin, the SBA Dollar is one of the reasons. Also, the packaging on those coins is stale (the have one of each coin and a cheap plastic "display case").

Recommendations.... As I said pre-1964 sets are georgous and well done. Right now, I'm looking to complete the "Silver Prestige Proof Sets" from the 90's. They are beautiful examples of very well struck frosted cameo's. I also recommend the proof State Quarters and proof Presidential dollars as a couple of sets that are well represented in proof.

If you're looking for good deals on proof sets, try "Coins by Bobby." He's got nice deals on individual sets and on set runs....

I also collect proof sets but limit myself to the silver sets. The changing quarters and now Presidential dollars are cool with their introduction. As for years to choose the 1999 and the 2009 are my favorites. 1999 being the first year of the Statehood Quarters and the 2009 holding the Lincoln Cent commemorative. Silver sets have been issued annually since 1992.

I've been collecting the 1992-up Silver Proof Sets for years, and I now have the 2008-2013 Clad Proof Sets as well. 2008 and 2012 Clads were early sell-out years, and the 2010 Clad is suprisingly strong in price. The 2012 Clad Set now trades for more than double its issue price, a greater gain in value than made by the 2012 Silver Proof Set.

If you are looking for proof coins for invest purpose then the mint dates really don't matter. However, if you are looking for something which has a bit of history attached to it then consider going for set of certified liberty gold coin.

Silver proofs are the way to go as you seem not interested in dates per say. So silver is the way to go especially if your interested in value.
