I have not bought from this seller but traditionally these bulk sellers fluff the listing greatly - this one added "stars" Uncleaned Roman Coins - Probably Lot of 50 - I would Count to make sure. Ancient coins - yea. Rome - It would be a stretch of the imagination to think all these coins are Rome mint. Unsearched - Bologna! I would bet you will not find rare coins, silver coins or gold coins. These were searched out and conveniently removed. Prior to packaging. If you do find a rare coin or a silver coin it will almost certainly be well below an acceptable grade and thus was not removed, simply because it does not have enough merit to earn its own listing. You will not find gold. I used to buy uncleaned lots, I learned what I wanted to learn, and stopped wasting my money on dirty slugs with detail that takes a good imagination.

Thanks for the input Ancientnoob. Hahaha yeah, the stars kind of tipped me off to something shady. I got each coin though for a buck so I figured what the heck, i'll give it a shot, nothing better to do. Lol, yeah i'll counte em. O yeah I figured they were tested for silver and quality. I guess if I had bought a huge lot like 1000 coins they would miss some. 50 maybe one... All well. I think it'll be fun.

For a buck, Why not? There is much to be learned from cleaning coins. Sometimes you get impressive results. Generally lots of a thousand have also been thoroughly searched as well. Many of the huge 1000 coin lost are short quite a few coins and they are often packaged by weight. You will often find these lots "seeded". For example, you might find a 3rd super common silver Ant. in g - vg condition amongst 800 or so crusty 4th century coins, makes you think its worth while. Those thousand lots used to be had for a few hundred bucks now your looking a over 2 grand. Either way ancient coins are fun, please don't let me discourage you- but once you have built of the skills you will buy what you like and what you want to collect. A lot can be learned from cleaning, some of the members here (chrsmat and BenByfield) have the skills to polish a turd.

AncientNoob, lol nice turd reference. What do you think of the coin lots that Masis recommends from the guy at dirtyoldcoins dot com ? Don't know if you've bought from there but he claims there are keepers in every lot for his more expensive lots.

Ras is awesome at Dirtyoldcoins. He doesn't tend to sell lots except with his Roman Emperor in a Box package. He generally sells single coins. He also is the guy who wrote ERIC I and II and Aorta and is currently working on ERIC III.
Another good place I have been buying from recently is Noble Roman Coins. Kevin and Sherri are great people and have some nice desert patina, ptolmey's, and greek uncleaned. Plus some nice provincial coins. Also they have a really popular group of Croatian coins that have been selling really fast.

Thanks for the posts Whizb4ng and Chrsmat71. I'll have to look at Noble Roman Coins. Chrsmat, Yeah I was thinking the same thing. If I could see the actual photo then i'd be in better shape. On a positive note though I found this ebay feedback from the ebay seller's feedback page, nice coins only 10 duds out of 100 excellent value nival1942 ( 529 ) Maybe it's a sign! Joe

I just received an order from DOC today, will try to take and post 'before' pics later. I bought a small assortment so you'll be able to see examples of several of his categories.

Here is another one of this sellers offerings. Authentic ancient coins, 24K GOLD CLAD, more likely dipped in gold nail polish.....sigh. Your home town feel good dealer, ruining genuine ancient coins while making a nice profit so we can all sleep well at night, ugh!
