Hello again,

I am interested in learning whether the term "VG Details" on a graded coin actually means the coin is VG and therefore indicative of its current value or if this is just used to make claim to the fact that the coin does have some areas about it that are "VG" and not necessarily indicative of the coin as a whole?

Usually, that means the coin has a VG quality, but they can't give it a grade because they think the coin was cleaned. Does it have a number listed? cause that would identify the reason it was not given an actual grade.

Thank you. I have seen coins on ebay listed at book value that have this terminology and say nothing about cleaning.

I have a few slabbed coins as "Genuine". On mine, the first number of the barcode tells its story.
2127.92 and 2428.94
92 = Cleaning
94 = Altered Surfaces

PCGS's list of "Problem Coins" is near the bottom of the page

EDIT - had to adjust my link to go to the grades
not sure why its not going directly to the grades, but guess you will have to search for them

The word "Details" in a grade or coin description is an immediate red flag. Used accurately, it means the coin's characteristics are not original. Either it's been cleaned, defaced or somehow altered, and the value has been more or less drastically reduced as a result.

Really, the only time a "details" grade is useful is for key date coins. You will at least know it's genuine. Other than that, it means there's a problem that prevented it from getting a "normal" slab.

It means that "If this coin did not have the problem(s) mentioned, the sharpness or details visible on the coin would have allowed it to be assigned a grade of VG."
