I recently was looking for proof sets from the 1950s and I saw that early 1950s proof sets are a whole lot more expensive than later 1950s. How come the early 1950s proof sets are more expensive then later 1950s?

Far fewer were minted; demand does the rest.

A variable of what Dave said... a lot of the sets were also broken up and parts sold off. Which makes the sets even harder to acquire. The Franklin half alone can be quite expensive to buy - by itself in the early 50's.
