Several months ago, I purchased a 1932 S Washington quarter on ebay. I posted some pics to get members opinions on grade and authenticity. I decided to purchase the coin for $120.

Today, a gentleman from HCC coins was doing free appraisals at a local bank. Along with some other stuff, I brought in the quarter. The fellow felt that the mint mark looked rather dubious and suspected fakery.

I'd like to get the coin authenticated through a grading service. Can anyone suggest an inexpensive but reputable company that will do this. Because the coin is so inexpensive, I hate to spend much more than $25.

Casey

ANACS should be able to accommodate you. And actually the fact he thought the mintmark looked dubious is a good thing, the mintmarks on the genuine 32 D and S quarters typically look "bad", like they are sitting in a hole and look like they were added. The rule of thumb on these is if the mintmark looks bad they are good and if they look good they are bad.

If you want a TPG to look at it, ANACS will to nicely for the least amount of money and they are very well respected. PCGS or NGC won't give it too much of a premium over ANACS that won't get eaten by the fees.

Alternatively, if you're convinced that it's a counterfeit, I offer counterfeit attribution services over at The Black Cabinet which could also be of help.

I agree with conder101. I am not sure how experienced the guy is but for someone who is not familiar with the coin, the mint mark on genuine coins just does not look like it belongs. Like already mentioned, it appears to be sitting in a depression and it is quite bold when compared to the low relief of the rest of the design. Many members including me did not think it was a fake but if you still would like to have it authenticated by a TPG, ANACS would be the cheapest if you were send it in yourself. You can try piggybacking on a dealer's submission to PCGS, NGC, or ANACS.

ANACS is the least expensive TPG out there. And it won't diminish the value too much.

Called anacs today. Told the fellow on the line that I wanted to put this coin back in an
album after having it authenticated. To that end, I asked if he could just send the coin
back in a 2X2 flip. He said that I'd have to get it slabbed.

If I got just this coin looked at, it would cost almost $40 - $19 for shipping and handling and $19 for grading. Not worth it in my book. I could get 5 coins graded for about $100, including shipping.

The problem is that I don't really have 5 other coins that are worth all that much.

Do any large coin shows come to your area of a reasonable difference?

The TPGs usually have a table at a large show where you may be able to get someone to just confirm that its real and tell them you cont care about the grade just want to know its authentic
