Hi there all,

I have in my possession a Swiss 1907 20 Rappen coin. I am not a specialist on world coins but it looks to me to be extremely prooflike. There is a big difference between the fields and the portrait in terms of texture and it just seems to be overall of a better finish then a standard currency coin. However, my issue of Kraus does not list a proof example of the 1907 or any similar dates and these start much later on. Is it possible that this coin could be a proof i.e. would they have been minting proofs of yearly issued currency coins around this time?

Thanks for any help, Jack.

Here are some photos (if I have uploaded them properly). It is difficult from the photos to grasp the difference between the texture of the bust and the obverse field, for example. The head is almost frosted whilst the field is a bright finish. Any thoughts are always appreciated!!

Hi:
I'm mainly a collector of French coins, but I have a respectable knowledge and collection of Swiss material as well. I have two initial responses to your question: first, you might try to find a Swiss equivalent of our " Red Book" ( ANA lending library perhaps?) because I've always found that catalogs devoted to a single-country's coinage are much better at representing them than the Krause is. Second, the Swiss mint in Bern is noted for the quality of its circulation coins: I've often come across uncirculated Swiss francs that looked proof quality. This example in the photos seems like a choice specimen, but my inclination is to call it a circulation strike. Still, it would be worth it to find out if they made any proof that year (they may well not have).
