Like it or too gimmicky?

http://news.coinupdate.com/baseball...oncave-1967/

My initial thoughts are, I LOVE IT. Given the subject matter, baseball, I will certainly be in line to get a few.

Im torn on it. Its baseball so obviously I'm getting it and probably several lol, but not a fan of the concave idea. I really dont see what that adds to it or at least wish they would have done one normal one like that, but Ill wait to see it in hand before passing final judgement.

I would usually think something like that is gimmicky but considering the subject matter, the convex/concave design it unique and entirely appropriate. Since I live in Baseball Heaven, I will be ordering a couple of the silver dollars

I am going to have to wait to see them in hand before I can comment. I do not plan on getting them from the mint, so I can wait.

I'll be getting them - not sure one way or the other about the idea behind them.

I suppose it might be said that if I do get these, they will have to remain in the OGP and not cracked.

If you really want to get wild and crazy get a slabbed one from ebay

I have like 40 slabbed ikes right now one day you'll give into the temptation and get a slabbed coin and one of my two goals will be complete

In all seriousness I do wonder if the concave will be enough that they don't fit in slabs

I'm wondering too how these will display. I'm guessing however the mint comes up with they will have to stay that way.
I am really interested in the gold and silver dollar tho. Curious if they will be a dud or the next rarity.

I'm looking forward to the coins, but more because I'm a baseball fan than because of their convex/concave surfaces. I do hope, however, that this is not the start of Congress authorizing gimmicky US commemorative coins. I'd much rather leave such "enhancements" to other mints around the world who seem to be racing each other to come up with the next gimmick that further distances their releases from traditional coins.

I'm disappointed that the three coins of the Baseball HOF program are all going to have the same obverse and reverse designs. It would have been a more attractive and interesting set of coins, IMO, if they each had a distinctive design.

I couldn't agree more commems! I am excited about this release because the unique design fits with the subject matter but I hope they leave it alone after that. As for the same design on all three coins I'm with you also. Then again, it will make me feel better about just getting one of the three and saving money for other coins.

The Clemente medal didn't spark a series of gimmicky coins and medals, but then again us US collectors are getting a little paranoid about it now.

The Clemente national commemorative medal was struck in 1973, a very different time for the US Mint in terms of its technical capabilities. It was also a time in which coin/medal gimmickry was not commonplace nor was it sought after by collectors.

Today's "can you top this" gimmick race among world mints has created a different type of collector, one that is constantly looking for technical innovation from their coins. I just hope the US Mint doesn't begin catering to this modern day fad.
